BREAKOUT SESSIONS:

The Big Retreat at Port Ludlow
The District Perspective

Rosemary Aragon

Also attending the Retreat was District Governor Elect Rosemary Aragon, a member of the University Rotary Club, who explained the new District Leadership Plan. “This new structure is focused on four main areas: Support, Resources, Leverage, Coordination. These cover the areas in which the District can provide service to its clubs. On July 1, when the new administration takes office, we will move to this new structure. It’s all for the clubs. The Assistant Governors, who were first assigned two years ago, will have more responsibility. But, in all things, we can’t do it by ourselves. John DeWater will serve as Assistant Governor for the BBRC, Issaquah, Lake City, Park Hill, and University Rotary Clubs. He is Kim’s “go-to guy.” The AG’s job is to visit their assigned clubs several times a year.” Rosemary will become District Governor on July 1, having been invited to the BBRC retreat and taking the opportunity to find out how a club planning retreat is run.

DGE Aragon concluded by telling attendees about a new emphasis on the Avenues of Services and special committees in each club. Brian Evison had suggested to Rosemary the formation of a District Committee, made up of the chairpersons of the various club committees, i.e., Vocational, International, Community, Foundation, PolioPlus, and Membership. This will give greater cooperative efforts to increase committee’s output. “Their jobs will be to help you do your job.”

One of the highlights of the coming year will be the Landmine Action Conference, set for the last day of September and the 1st of October, 2002. “If you’d like to work a booth at Barcelona or be involved in Polio Immunization Week in Ethopia, I’ve got a job for you! And, if you have individual ideas and visions, the District is the way you can accomplish success.” Two final items on the upcoming calendar, Joe Serra, a very inspirational speaker, will headline the program for the District Foundation and Membership Seminar at the Mercer Island Community Center at 8:00 a.m., on Saturday, April 20. And, on June 1, the District Leadership Assembly will take place at Ballard High School. Each of these seminars is a treasure trove of nuggets about Rotary. Great for new members!
