Kevin Jewell, representing the World Community Service Committee, presented a check for $2,000 to Corky Morse, representing the Agros Foundation, a Seattle-based non-profit organization “dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty in the world through land ownership, to build self-sustaining and thriving villages.” The check is the first, to reach the final total of $6,000.
The BBRC was introduced to Agros’ founder, Skip Li, a Seattle attorney who spoke to the Club last year. Since 1984, Agros has assisted in the development of 16 villages in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua.
Morse told how the program works: “A family in a village in Guatemala is targeted by Argros. With help from the organization, they begin to acquire land, build a home, and the village gets an irrigation and sanitation system. As the family begins to produce crops, they start a pay-back program to Agros.”
Morse gave three examples from people of the village. “There are 85 families in the village of Trapichitos. All of the people in this area suffered violence, as they were caught in the crossfire with rebels and government forces, putting everyone at risk for many years.”
Agros with its slogan of “Land, Hope, Life,” offers opportunities for interested people to contribute regularly to enable families to build new communities. Skip Li believes that the life of one child changed will impact all the generations to follow.
