Motivating Employees
Friday’s program featured Jeff Kemp, Executive Director of Families Northwest, an independent, nonprofit organization “equipping leaders and unifying communities to create a healthy environment for marriage, family life and children.” Kemp shared the vision of his organization to “see our state and region become the world’s best place to be married and raise children.”
Jeff related the story of his son who was 5 years old at the time. Jeff, because of a previous commitment, missed the second half of his son’s birthday party. Five or six months later, when they passed each other in the hallway, his son asked, “Dad, this year, are you going to be at ALL of my birthday party?” Jeff’s conclusion was “It does matter to them. It’s devastating not to be paying attention. We miss some of the most important messages because we’re out of balance.” So, relationships in our lives are what makes the difference. “A relationship-based value system and a long-term vision will lead to positive balance.” The secrets to gaining balance: Develop an unconditional relationship-value system — Service over Self — giving Encouragement to others, and especially to your loved ones, valuing and serving others. Develop a long-term vision in your life — consider the eco-system of your family. We don’t raise our families in a vacuum. We should be environmentalists to our families. Forty percent of families have no dads in the home. We don’t have a kid problem, we have an adult problem. There’s a lot of hope, with the signs of this young generation hopeful. We need a group that believes a vision for a #1 place in the world for kids and families. That’s the vision of Families Northwest. Balance comes when we commit to our families. How do we gain balance?
These secrets are out. It’s as simple and as difficult as putting family relationships first. During Question & Answer time, Jeff was asked for his observation of gay relationships. “We want to make life better in America, raise up marriage — defined as being between a man and woman. But, there’s room for civil treatment for all. It’s the children who count.” Too much emphasis on sports? “We’ve gone overboard. We lose childhood with our kids if we push them into sports. Do more things with your kids.” In ten years, “our goal is to make the Northwest region the greatest place for kids and parents — Oregon, Washington, Idaho. In churches, and other public organizations.” For Jeff’s presentation, a book for a 4-year-old blind youngster at the Kindering Center has been presented in his name as the BBRC’s commitment to stamp out illiteracy. Thanks, to Steve Goldfarb for his introduction. |
