Report on the Cambodian Project

The BBRC’s International Service has offered support to the Cambodian demining project, which has become a District 5030 project under the direction of Sally Mackle, Director of International Service for the Rotary Club of Seattle #4.

SallyMackle1A year ago, Sally led a group of Rotarians on a visit to Viet Nam with the Vietnamese GSE team. “We were able to spend a day in a Cambodian village, one that has suffered greatly during the wars of the past. The number of amputees was staggering. Cambodia is one of the most heavily mined countries in the world and, as a result, one out of two people are amputees.”

Sally went on to report that Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Their wages average $1.00 a day. The Khmer Rouge, the Vietnamese and the Cambodian Government all laid landmines. “Villagers have to put up with the mines. They are everywhere.”

When she returned, Sally contacted Halo Trust, an organization that sponsors demining projects. “We were able to mount a challenge grant from Seattle #4 which proposed to match $10,000 with other clubs in the District. Today, 15 clubs have participated, led by the contribution of $5,000 from the BBRC. We needed $30,000 to finish the demining project we’ve got the money to make this a success!”

Sally showed a sample of mines that are buried all over this country. “We are clearing an area about the size of three football fields. The deminers have found 155 mines.” The next step in the project is to do some community development. Take some of the funds to punch in a water well, and build a community center. “Then, next year, we can raise a few more funds to help the villagers get some livestock so they can become more self-sufficient and begin to slowly expand their economy.”

Sally calls the project “Rotary Village.” It will be part of a tour November 2-19 to Viet Nam and Cambodia. Contact Sally for more details.
