Motivating Employees

JeffKempFriday’s program featured Jeff Kemp, Executive Director of Families Northwest, an independent, nonprofit organization “equipping leaders and unifying communities to create a healthy environment for marriage, family life and children.” Kemp shared the vision of his organization to “see our state and region become the world’s best place to be married and raise children.”

Jeff earned his BA from Dartmouth and an MBA from Pepperdine, while squeezing in an 11-year career as a quarterback in the NFL. “You know, it’s all a matter of balance. It’s easy to lose our balance. And, it’s hard to get it back, particularly when balance is not so physical but when it impacts our time, emotion, and family.”

Jeff related the story of his son who was 5 years old at the time. Jeff, because of a previous commitment, missed the second half of his son’s birthday party. Five or six months later, when they passed each other in the hallway, his son asked, “Dad, this year, are you going to be at ALL of my birthday party?” Jeff’s conclusion was “It does matter to them. It’s devastating not to be paying attention. We miss some of the most important messages because we’re out of balance.” READ MORE

ErnieHaydenRotarians make it a habit to help one another. John Mix always needs more help that any other Rotarian, when his computer goes down at least once a year, causing grief all around. The “Doom” virus struck sometime in mid-February, and the computer needed a spring cleansing. With a new, clean disk, the challenge seems to always be: “How do you get all the data restored to the machine that was there prior to the attack?" Mix’s Outlook email wouldn’t send and the Clubmate software wouldn’t let attendance be tabulated.

Enter, Angel Ernie Hayden. He and his halo flew in at 4:15 Sunday afternoon and had squared Mix away by 7:30. Ernie is a lot of things. He's a:

  • great Rotarian
  • valuable member of the BBRC, claiming the Secretary’s job in July
  • fine photographer
  • great husband and father
  • real smart cookie when it comes to Security issues and computers
  • real good friend

If you don’t know Ernie, you’re missing one of the joys of Rotary. Let’s hear it for Ernie, for without him, you wouldn’t be hearing from Mix (hmmmm ... maybe that could be expressed differently!)

Thought for the Week

The greater the loyalty of a group towards the group, the greater is the motivation among the members to achieve the goals of the group, and the greater the probability that the group will achieve its goals.
