Vol. 15, No. 17, October 21, 2002

THIS WEEK:

Care and Concern

Rotarians were informed that Carolyn Johnson, wife of Norm, underwent surgery Friday for cancer. Carolyn was released from Overlake on Sunday. According to Norm, “While the surgeon was on vacation, we were told by his office staff that this would be an outpatient process. So I was very relieved when he said, ‘Oh, no, you will spend the night!’ It was good to know that she would receive professional care that first night and that I was off the hook for nursing duty. She stayed an extra night due to nausea from the anesthesia, but was raring to go on Sunday morning. Carolyn will take the week off work to recuperate and await the news of teh pathology report, due on Tuesday.

Jeff Cashman was granted a one-year medical leave of absence as he embarks on a new round of treatment for MS. “I’ve had this affliction for the last 18 years. We don’t know a lot about MS. But we try to treat it so you don’t become debilitated. Now, a new treatment is available, which involves regular chemotherapy. I will get monthly chemo treatments, and then it will go to quarterly. My intention is to return as soon as I can to good health.”

Members of the BBRC, always faithful to hold those we hold dear in our thoughts and prayers, are asked to remember Carolyn and Jeff.

Referendum 51 – The Gorton Perspective

Washington’s Senior Senator for 18 years, Slade Gorton delivered the view of one of the co-chairperson’s of the Referendum 51 issue at Friday’s meeting. Gorton’s political service to the state included eight years as Attorney General and terms as a legislator. Senator Gorton was raised in Chicago and educated on the East Coast, but, after graduation moved, to Washington to follow his career. Chuck Kimbrough, introduce the Senator, saying that “all corners of the state have benefited from his work on their behalf.”

Governor Gary Locke met with Slade in March and invited him to become “a co-chairperson for Referendum 51. I was happy to accept the invitation. I can’t remember any ballot measure that is more important.” MORE

Rotary at the Library

The Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club will take its show “on the road” on Friday, November 1st, vacating our usual meeting place because of a conflict.

Breakfast will be served at the Bellevue Regional Library at 1111 110th NE. If you’re unfamiliar with this facility, directions are available at www.kcls.org and click on Find Your Library. Parking is available in the lot or under the building.

Speakers will be Bill Ptacek, Director, of the King County Library System (and current president of the Bellevue Noon Rotary Club) and Jim King, Manager of the Bellevue Regional Library.

For planning purposes, it is necessary for BBRC members to let Polly Stansell know if you are coming to this event.

The program and details have been coordinated by our own Jeanne Thorsen, Who is Executive Director of the King County Library System Foundation.

Thought for the Week

Martin Luther said: “Everything that is done in the world is done by hope.”

Bellevue’s Past, Present, and Future will be explored by Matt Terry, the City’s Planning Director, at Friday’s regular meeting. Terry will lead a discussion about land use and planning issues facing the community. Bring a guest and enjoy a scrumptious buffet breakfast at the Glendale Country Club. 7:00 a.m. breakfast, 7:30 meeting, and 8:00 a.m. program. Y’all come!

ADMIN CORNER
According to Ripley's Believe It Or Not, a man named Iccolo Miccolo played piccolo in the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

A Poem from John Mix’s growing-up days:

A tutor who tooted the flute
Tried to tutor two tooters to toot.
Said the two to the tutor
Is it harder to toot?
Or to tutor two tooters to toot?

Needless to say, until meeting Mary Bell, we didn’t even know what a flautist was!

[Was this after the Mouse Drool beer?]

Business at hand: Bills have gone out, computer is cooperating. Any problems, contact the Administrator (Ph 360-863-0861).
