Student of the Month:
Devon Hector, Eastside Academy

x0523SOTMA look at Rotarians of the Future at a Student of the Month award presentation last Friday, where the honoree was Eastside Academy Devon Hector. The Academy serves 35 students at facilities offered at Bellevue’s First Presbyterian Church.

Erin Hitchcock, school counselor, told about the team’s first basketball season. “It was a tough schedule, where wins were hard to come by. The season forced us to redefine winning. Early into the season, Devon turned in his jersey. He was a big part of the team. After a few weeks, he came back and told the coaches and the team he wanted to return. He made a big contribution to the team, and made an investment in the school, team, and himself.”

Board President Gary Brooks and his wife have given hours to making this program work. “My wife Julie and I have been walking along side these kids, cheering them on” as they successfully take on the challenges of changing their lives. Erin Hitchcock, Marianne Wong and Mike Broom, Eastside Academy staff members cited the school’s mentoring program making a big difference to the students, as well as the school’s addiction program helping them break their addictions.

Larry May, on behalf of the Student of the Month program, awarded Devon his plaque. Also attending were Devon’s mother, Cam Russell and uncle Chuck Handley.
