ADMIN CORNER

• We’re moving quickly toward the final month of the Rotary Year. The Treasurer would appreciate it if you’d square accounts and make your dues payments. She has a year-end report to turn out and would like everyone to start 2005-2006 with a clean slate.

• Members are doing a great job in filling out their new directory forms. For those who haven’t visited the “New Directory” in Member’s Only, do so this week and spruce up your new listing.

• Any correspondence (fan letters, complaints or checks) can be mailed to the BBRC mailbox: P.O. Box 3003, Bellevue WA 98009-3003.

The Friday Program:
Computers for Slovakia

x0523MartinkaPowellJohn Martinka and Peter Powell provided a one-two punch for the District 5030’s Computers for the World project by spending a week in Slovakia, installing and instructing users how to use 120 computers. The project had been in the planning stages for over a year and combined with the talents of the students of Newport High school.

Martinka explained that he and his family had made several trips to his father’s homeland of Czechoslovakia over the past five years. They were busy tracing relatives and introducing themselves to these new-found family members. During the last few trips, John kept an eye out for possible projects that could involve the BBRC.

Over a year ago, the Martinka family was back in the area that is now Slovakia, a couple of hours south of Krakow, Poland. They visited a local school in the city of Zilina. It was apparent the school had no computers. John thought, “Ah ha! A job for Computers for the World!”

World Community Service Slates Important Meeting

Kim Shrader, World Community Service Committee Chairperson, has notified his committee of an extraordinary meeting immediately following Friday's regular meeting. The committee has a balance of funds in its budget and needs to make an appropriation to a selected project. Committee members will decide on whether to fund a project in Romania, as proposed by Tim Moriarty. The meeting begins at 8:33 a.m. and may continue for 30 minutes.

Kim also published a list of projects the committee has funded this year:

  • $3,000, to Agros, the last of a 3-year commitment;
  • $5,000 to John Martinka’s Computers for the World project in Slovakia;
  • $5,000 to Ethiopian Water projects,
  • joining over 20 District 5030 clubs donating to the projects spearheaded by University District club;
  • $5,000 for tsunami relief, combined with over $7,500 from individual club member donations.

This totals $18,000 in allocations, with $1,000 yet to designate.

Sayoko Press Conference

x0523SayokoSeems that our hard-working Fellowship chair suffered all week with pangs of guilt because she told her audience a week ago that “the Rotating the Wheel dinner will throw out Norm and his board and install Steve’s new board.” That comment bugged her all week, so she requested five minutes to clear the slate.

Sayoko apologized for not knowing that the program is called “Rotating the Wheels,” meaning the 12 people who have agreed to run the club each year. At least, they think they are wheels! So, she paid $5.00 for her wayward comment about throwing Norm out, $5.00 for leaving the “s” off of Wheels, another $5.00 for her failing to uphold the Perfect Manners Always Taught by Dick Brown and $5.00 to have John DeWater explain what the event was all about. $20 later, Sayoko’s guilt was assuaged. See how easy it is? Forgiveness and public flogging is a wonderful thing.

Oh, yes, the Rotating the Wheels dinner will take place Friday, June 24, at the Mercer Island Beach Club. Sign up online — Sayoko wants a reply whether you’re coming or not! Click here and fill out the form, or we may have another Press Conference!
