Rotary First Harvest
For the first 8 months of the Rotary year, RFH has gathered 7 million pounds of produce for distribution through our food bank partners. This is over 2 million pounds more than we had collected at this point last year. The official RFH goal for this fiscal year was 8 million pounds, so we should finish the year well over the goal and far ahead of any prior year. The RFH volunteers appearing for the January work party at Pier 91 were shocked to see pallet after pallet of gourmet chocolate collected by RFH. Thanks to contact lead by Newcastle Rotary, RFH was able to coordinate the donation of 74,000 pounds of premium chocolate. Some of this was the specialty wrapped chocolate we see locally each year during the Christmas season. Although certainly not the usual produce staple of RFH, the chocolate must have been a welcome treat at the local food banks. We know that to many people chocolate is one of the major food groups! RFH continues to find creative ways to bring non-traditional produce to our local food banks. We had collected a huge quantity of frozen corn. Some of that corn was recently traded to the Arizona gleaning program for several truckloads of fresh grapefruit, and the first of that grapefruit started on its way to the local food banks after the RFH work party on Valentines Day. RFH is working to establish a similar trade program in California that would bring fresh nectarines and plums to our area in exchange for some of our surplus. RFH is a district-wide program supported by all 51 clubs in our District 5030. We can all be proud of this project that was started by a few Rotarians collecting surplus home garden vegetables for distribution at the food bank. From that humble, but noble, beginning, RFH has become a major force in helping to feed the less fortunate in our state. Dont forget, the monthly RFH Work Party takes place on the second Saturday of each month at Pier 91 in Seattle. Mark April 10 as the date youll show up to help get bulk foods ready for distribution through the area food banks. Call Kevin if you need more information. |
