Annual Planning Retreat in La Conner

(Nearly half of the membership will travel 90 minutes north of Bellevue to the pleasant shore side town of La Conner, site of this year’s Planning Retreat. The event begins with a Golf Outing Friday morning at the Avalon Course in Burlington while the professional shoppers of the BBRC descend on La Conner for some retail therapy. Here’s Jenny Andrews’ take on the retreat)

ShoppersAs many of you know, the retreat-related shopping extravaganza has traditionally been the viewed as a "women's event." As co-founder of this annual event, along with Sharon Edberg, I want to lay to rest this unfortunate assumption.

Rotary women — it goes without saying — will be there for this fabulous day of retail therapy.

Guys, you may not realize all of the benefits of breaking through the glass ceiling of retailing. Here are just a few:

At cocktail parties, when your wives or significant others are discussing Kate Spade, Louis Vuitton, or Manolo Blahnik, you'll be the only guy in the room who knows what the hell they're talking about.

Got a birthday or anniversary staring you down and no hope of selecting that perfect gift? Half a day with the Rotary shoppers and you'll be regaled as a "sensitive guy who really knows what women want."

With proper training, motivation and persistence, you could be the first Rotary man to be awarded the coveted "Eddy Award" for excellence in the field of retailing. Imagine the envy of the other Rotary guys.

Vicky Hunsicker Sanko and Jane Kuechle, both recent recipients of the Eddy will be on hand to:

  • demonstrate their proven credit card handling techniques
  • share their incredible "visualize success" approach to moving from "browse to buy"
  • provide tips on proper training, nutrition and equipment to ensure retail success
  • discuss breaking through "the wall" when your dogs are barking

The shoppers met last Friday after the BBRC meeting to discuss logistics, strategies and destinations. Forget golf. This is real Rotary fellowship!

(The reason for it all — the planning retreat — gets underway officially at the evening mealtime at headquarters in the La Conner Country Inn. Following will be a little late-night wagering, with the Saturday morning breakfast and the nitty-gritty of planning ahead for the new Rotary year. It all ends by noon. This is the first weekend of the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival, so it’s fitting that Retreaters plan a quick trip by the blooming fields on their way home.)
