Mercer Island Boys & Girls Club Gets Check

Tom Smith, BBRC Youth Services Committee Chairperson, introduced BBRC member Dean Pollock, who has served on the Mercer Island Boys and Girls Club Board of Directors for 16 years. Dean, in turn, introduced Rick Ryan, Director of the program.

“We have a fantastic facility, serving over 2,000 kids on Mercer Island, as well as off Island. Your $1,800 check will help us begin a national tutoring program. We are the second Boys & Girls Club in the nation to establish this program. The money will help pay for an instructor, materials, and a two-hour battery of tests to help determine the kids’ study, math, and reading skills. We have targeted them to move along and improve within six months. Twenty-four kids have been enrolled in our pilot program. We expect to triple that number this coming year. We are partnering with schools to help kids. It’s really a ‘homework assistance program.’”
