Raffle Wrap-up
Howard Johnson, Chairpesron of this year’s Raffle Committee, announced the final tally from the 2001 Raffle: $106, 267! “Our target was $105,000 which worked out to be an average of $921 per member. Instead the Club wrapped up the raffle with a record-setting $932 average! Bob McKorkle and Terry Peterson were our sales managers and we owe a lot to their efforts.”
Peterson gave a final recognition to the Multi and Millionaires. “This year, we chose a theme and then worked on individual accomplishment. ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ served as the focal point for our campaign. But, this we know – Rotarians raise money! And our 18 teams, each named after its sponsor, came through with flying colors. We tallied 48 Millionaires amongst our membership and an incredible six Multi-Millionaires! They are Mary Truesdell, Steve Goldfarb, Norm Johnson, Alex Rule, Dick Brown, and Don Deasy.”
One third of the 18 teams (6) cracked the $1,000 average team member sales. Leading the pack was the Windermere team, captained by Kelly Dykstra, with an average of $1,313 and a team total of $7,880. The Seattle Boat team, chaired by Alex Rule, was second in the Team Derby, followed by Pella Windows, with Phil Salvatori at the helm; Banner Bank, headed by Paul Martin; Parker Smith & Feek, with Norm Johnson as herder; and Alvin Goldfarb Jewelers, with Evelyn Cogswell as team leader.
Kim Shrader, BBRC President-Elect and the man totally in charge of the Raffle (which means it was his to win or lose!), introduced the winner of the 2001 VW Beetle GL: Mary Kay Sanchez, of Bellevue. Mary Kay is the administrative assistant for GLY Construction in Bellevue. “I was speechless … Mr. Young is a most incredible boss. Each year, he’s bought these raffle tickets and told me this year that ‘we’re gonna win it.’ And, he was right, for which I’m thankful.” Frank Young, the aforementioned “incredible boss,”’ took over the introduction process and said some nice things about Mary Kay, the BBRC, and GLY Construction. He recognized Kelly Dykstra, who sold the winning ticket. Frank, although a member of another Bellevue Rotary Club, said he enjoyed the raffle, even to the point of sponsoring a team. He said, however, that if he’s going to sponsor a team next year, he’d like some better players. He then paid $100 for the commercial. Frank can come visit any old time.
Donn Roberts, Bellevue, was the second-place winner. Donn, a long-standing member of the BBRC, said he had given the 3-night cruise to one of his staff members who had recently married, but couldn’t fit in a honeymoon. Now, that’s class!
Klaus Meyn, of Redmond, won the third prize, the $500 shopping spree at Bellevue Square.
