x0516SOTMStudents of the Month:
Derek Benach & Fernando Rubio

Two students from Sammamish High School were honored for their achievements as the April and May Students of the Month. “Overcoming life challenges and moving on is the theme for these two honorees,” said Rotarian Bob Holert.

Derek Benach, a senior at Sammamish, was accompanied by his mother Laurie. Derek had significant health problems last year, fighting cancer, from which he has battled back. He is on his way to recovery, has a wonderful attitude and was voted the most inspirational player on the football team. Derek plans to study medicine by first earning a degree in molecular biology at Western Washington University and then going on to medical school.

Fernando Rubio came to this country two years ago from Mexico. He did not speak any English and came close to quitting school. He also fought his way back, inspired by his family and by counselors at the school, and he is making respectable grades and reported to his audience that “education is everything.”

Congratulations to these two young men who have the whole world ahead of them. Thanks also to Bob Holert for his introductions.
