Salvation Army Doughnuts & a Classification Talk

x0616NolanGetting the attention of hungry Rotarians, Captain Kelly Nolan of the Salvation Army gave his Classification Talk with a gift of Army Doughnuts. He told his audience that these doughnuts became recognized during the two World Wars in the 20th Century. They were distributed to the military by a group called the Hallelujah Lassies and today are distributed to commemorate the work done by the Salvation Army.

As for his talk, Kelly said he’d had several careers  he was attracted to math and science, electronics engineering, worked in the civil service, in aerospace, with computers, and then as a self-employed consultant, which went on for 17 years.

“I was always attracted to the tech field, but I must have been born in a pew because I’m a life-long Christian. In 1972 I attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in Seattle and now I’ve come full circle back to join the Salvation Army. I wear many hats, administration, as well as pastoring. The Salvation Army is a social service organization AND a church. We create a balance between worship and service. My uniform has the two letters SS save to serve and serve to save. Our goal is to meet spiritual needs of people wherever we go. And now that I’m a Rotarian, SS means Service above Self! I’m very happy to be a Rotarian!”

Kelly’s a keeper! Get to know him.
