Vol. 16, No. 29
January 19, 2004

Seattle-area Rotarians have a rare opportunity to enjoy great music while supporting both Rotary International and children’s hospitals. The Kursk Chamber Orchestra will be coming from Kursk, Russia, to join musical forces with Nathan Bello, a young piano virtuoso from Portland. They will be performing in Seattle to raise money for Kursk Children’s Hospital and Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Dick Spady, a long-time Rotarian and co-founder of Dick’s Drive-Ins in Seattle, is underwriting the cost of the concert as part of Dick’s Drive-Ins’ 50th Anniversary celebration. Co-sponsors include the Bellevue-Overlake Rotary Club and the Kursk (Russia) Rotary Club, which was started with the help of the Bellevue club.

The Kursk Chamber Orchestra consists of sixteen string players led by Sergei Proskourin, a founding member of the Kursk Rotary Club. Nathan Bello, though still in high school, has already won international recognition at the Russian-American Music Association International Festival of Young Virtuosos. All the musicians are donating their services.

Tickets are available for a minimum donation of $25 each. Of course, donations in any amount beyond that are greatly appreciated. All donations will be divided between the two children’s hospitals, with a small portion going to a scholarship fund for Nathan’s continued musical training. For this modest amount, Rotarians can support both children’s hospitals and the developing relationship between American and Russian Rotary Clubs, and enjoy an evening of great music with fellow Rotarians.

The Kursk Chamber Orchestra will be performing with Nathan in the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall at Benaroya Hall on Friday, February 6, at 8:00 pm.

For more information, contact Dick Clarke (Ph 206-524-2517).

In addition to attending the concert and contributing support to Children’s hospitals, there is another opportunity. Home hosting is required for 14 musicians. If you’d like to be part of the BBRC Home Hosting team, call or email Dick.
