Gordon Classification

Jim Gordon earned his Blue Badge by completing his classification talk Friday. Gordon, whose classification is “Wealth Strategist,” has a genealogy in Rotary, having entered the organization in 1981 in Fremont, California; become a member at the Rotary Club of Redmond and subsequently elected president in 1986 to 2003; and joined the BBRC last year. This gives Jim over 21 years in Rotary, and until Friday, he still had a Red Badge!

Jim was born in Rhode Island, lived in New Hampshire, lived in a home built in 1739 and enrolled at Cornell University in New York pursuing an engineering degree. “I flunked out of Cornell twice ... just couldn’t pass those engineering tests!” He moved on to Boston University where he earned a degree, then entered the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Pacific. “I spent 23 years on active duty and in the reserves. After my active service, I determined I wanted an MBA, so I enrolled at Stanford University. That’s where I met my future wife Marcia. I chased her for a time before she let me catch up to her. My mother always said I should marry a chased woman!”

Jim’s first job in the financial field was with Dean Witter and in 1986, he joined Smith Barney. He particularly enjoys having business owners, professional people and foundations as his clients. He’s on the board of the USO and been active in the Navy League. He has supported the efforts of Rotary First Harvest.

Jim most proud of his three kids, Laurel, 21, a student at Columbia, Jeffrey, 18, a US Marine, and Gretchen, 16, a student at Inglemoor High School.
