Student of the Month: Madison Overton
Madison Overton, accompanied by several members of the faculty and staff of Eastside Academy the Christian Alternative High School accepted the Student-of-the-Month plaque for May for her outstanding achievement at the Academy. In a most moving presentation, Madison talked about how shed pulled herself "up from despair. I figured out Im the enemy. Earlier, she had quit school, had attempted suicide a number of times (as early as 11), but then I turned myself around. I now know Im blessed because of the people whove supported me. Ill be going to Cascadia Community College or BCC and then on to the UW. At the conclusion of her talk, the audience rose to a standing ovation for Madison Overton. Madison was praised by two of her teachers. Her English teacher, Rachel Troutman, was high on Madisons ability to craft beautifully written words. She has a love of learning. What a joy it is to be a teacher to someone like Madison. Rachel then read a poem by Madison which spoke to her struggle and overcoming her fears. Gigi, Madisons mentor, gave a pitch to Rotarians to join the Academys Mentoring Program. We assign you in pairs and it takes only once a week to make a big difference in someones life. Thanks to Larry May for his introduction. |
