Polio Eradication Highlighted at Bellevue Square
With a visual display of an iron lung and a continuous video of Rotary’s National Immunization Days in Ethiopia in October, a group of over 40 Rotarians staffed the display at Bellevue Square this past weekend. A joint project of the BBRC and the Rotary Club of Bellevue, the crew’s job was to answer questions the general public had about Rotary’s commitment to eradicate the dreaded disease. As most of the Rotarians found out, there is a wide gulf of indifference and lack of knowledge about the disease.
During one shift on Saturday, six people stopped by the display to say that either they had the disease as youngsters or had close family members who suffered from the virus. Even though this was an educational opportunity to spread the word about the fight against polio, a bucket was available for donations. It was agreed that the two clubs would split the proceeds to go toward the Polio Eradication Campaign.
Volunteering their time for the BBRC were Elizabeth Sicktich, Brenda Ludwig, Maureen Concannon, Sharon Edberg, Don Deasy, John Mix, Jim Owens, Steve Roberts, Norm Johnson, Ken Perine, Carol Hoeft, John Hague, Tom Smith, Bob Holert, Steve Peters, Jim Zidar, Jenny Andrews, Polly Stansell, Ted Ederer, Sadru Kabani, Margie Burnett, Chuck Barnes, and Steve White. John Hague volunteered for a two-hour shift both days!
