CARE AND CONCERN
Old reliable Dale Hemphill has been fighting a cold and other ailments. Not having him around every Friday morning making sure everything’s ready for our club meeting leaves a big gap in the fellowship of the BBRC. Get well, Dale! A phone call from members will cheer him up!

Former BBRC member and Treasurer Jonathan Koshar and his wife, Lauren, welcomed their first child, Theodore Martin Koshar, to the family. Jonathan’s work in the wireless industry is taking him to Bermuda. Jonathan continues to support the BBRC Foundation with annual contributions.

HYODO QUOTING FRANKLIN
A quote from Benjamin Franklin at the Constitutional Convention, which was followed by three days of prayer, bible reading, and special church meetings, following which the Constitution was discussed and adopted:

"I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: ‘that God governs in the affairs of man.’ And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid?

“We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this. I also believe that without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in the political building no better than the builders of Babel; we shall be divided by our little, partial local interests; our projects will be confounded; and we ourselves shall become a reproach and a byword down to future ages.  And what is worse, mankind may hereafter from this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing government by human wisdom and leave it to chance, war, or conquest.

I therefore beg leave to move that, henceforth, prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven and its blessing on our deliberation be held in this assembly every morning before we proceed to business."

Friday Potpourri

Gill, Hyodo
Larry Gill (L) & Mike Hyodo

With the opening bell by President Shrader, the month of February came to a close. Mike Hyodo gave the invocation,  with a preamble quoting Benjamin Franklin (see box at right), then followed by the pledge to the flag. Larry Gill greeted seven visiting Rotarians, all of whom was asked to recall an their experience during the February 28, 2001, Seattle earthquake.

Sicktich, Andrews
Elizabeth Sicktich (L) & Jenny Andrews

It was noted that when you have a 115-member club, you can never be sure what the dress code will be. Several of the men showed up wearing subdued green shirts under their blue blazers, while Elizabeth Sicktich, Jenny Andrews, and Carlene Buty were all asked to rise to show off their dashing red and black outfits. What a fashion plate we are!

Evelyn Cogswell

Evelyn Cogswell cast about for panelists for the next Sammamish High School Career Café set for Tuesday, March 11, between 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The topic this month is “Business,” and she was able to get a trio of volunteers to participate. If you’re available, you might email her at cogswelle@bsd405.org. and see what slots might be open. These have been very successful looks into careers for interested high school students.

Lynne Gauthier

Community Service Committee Chairperson Madeline Gauthier has called a meeting of her committee for Friday, March 14, immediately following the regular Friday meeting.

The Fellowship Committee took an informal survey Friday to see how many members might be interested in another overnight visit with the Rotary Club of Leavenworth. The Committee will take the survey results to plan for another exchange with former member Tony Banks and his wife, Marcia, and Tony’s new Rotary Club. Plans are for a first week in June invasion.
