ROAR1

THIS WEEK

Dr. Brian Levin-Stankevich, Provost and Interim President of Eastern Washington University, will speak about a new cooperative and innovative program between EWU and Bellevue Community College, in which students can attend BCC classes and earn a bachelor’s degree from EWU. Invite a guest. Breakfast at 7:00 a.m. Glendale Country Club.

ADMIN CORNER

Can you believe it? Rotary Year 2004-2005 is about history. With a steady plugging ahead each day, Norm Johnson is about to become our Immediate Past President. Maybe it’s because the seasons were all screwed up. After all, the climatologists did say we were in for some kind of an El Nino. Winter came early for a week in late November, followed by a long spring beginning in mid-December through January, followed by a dry spell in February and one week of skiing in March-April and a heat wave in May. No wonder it went fast!

This also means that the business end of Rotary marks the end of the year, too. If your account has a balance, we’d appreciate a timely return. Treasurer Burnett wants to retire with all the money in the bank where it belongs. Thanks!

New Member Inducted: Tom Harrelson

x0530HarrelsonThomas “Tom” Harrelson became the newest BBRC member during induction ceremonies Friday morning. Tom is President and CEO of The Gemologist, Inc., a custom jewelry design store in Bellevue. He and his wife Beverly live just up the hill from Glendale on Main Street.

Tom graduated from high school in Tucson, AZ, attended Northern Arizona University at Flagstaff, and got his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Gulf Coast College in 1974. He served four years in the Air Force in Florida. At that time, he decided he would apply to Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, CA, to pursue his art career as a jewelry designer and gemologist. He graduated with honors and took his first job with Friedlander & Sons as their only certified gemologist.

Tom opened his own shop, The Gemologist, Inc., in 1977. He describes his work as “a private gemologist who designs, manufactures, repairs and appraises fine jewelry for private individuals and the commercial trade.” Tom’s career as a gemologist has taken him to Montana and Africa to open sapphire mines and he’s been involved in two gold mines in Oregon. He’s also started three additional companies involved in design and manufacture of fine art and collector jewelry.

Tom has volunteered with the City of Bellevue Arts Commissions as a judge and has been involved with both the Bellevue and Kirkland Networking organizations. He likes to golf, do cross country running and hiking. His sponsor is Steve Lingenbrink, and he is co-sponsored by Chris Ballard.

Tom received his Rotary pin from Steve and his Red badge from President Norm. Norm talked about how the four Avenues of Service help to focus on Rotary’s impact in the world and how Tom will be able to impact each of those Avenues.

After receiving a box of stuff containing all kinds of Rotary information, the assembled crowd stood to welcome the BBRC’s newest member Tom Harrelson.
