Foundation Report

x0404FoundationDon Chandler and Dick Brown rose to praise the Rotary Foundation for its work around the globe. Brown said that the latest Rotarian Magazine has an article from the new PolioPlus Chair who asks the question, “Why the continued need?” Because of the importation and re-infection of people in Africa, it’s estimated another $100 million dollars will be needed to curb the disease.

Bill Sergeant is the PolioPlus chair for RI and reports that Rotary’s efforts in partnership with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Center for Disease Control has reduced the incidence of polio by 99% — just 1000 cases a year. The remaining polio endemic countries include India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, Niger and Egypt. Unfortunately, as Sergeant reports, the additional funds are necessary to re-vaccinate children in these countries if success at eradication is to be achieved.

Chandler said that the BBRC’s Rotary Foundation campaign has gone “extremely well.” So far, $25,000 has been pledge toward a goal of $33,000. “When you see the good that the Rotary Foundation is able to spread throughout the world, it reminds you of the power of the theme ‘Every Rotarian, Every Year.’”

The goal for each individual is $300 a year. So far, 33 members have yet to reveal their Foundation contribution plans. “We are interested in achieving 100% participation at whatever level the members choose. We need to know your plans, so please contact me as soon as possible, or send a contribution made out to the Rotary Foundation to PO Box 3003, Bellevue WA 98009-3003. Thanks!”
