The Friday Program:
Presenting Positive News

x0404SusanWest1An inside look into the trials and tribulations of a budding TV anchor gave the BBRC audience pleasure on this April Fool’s Day. Seattle native Susan West who works for Q-13 News is in charge of Comcast cable’s Local Edition, which is programmed on CNN Headline News each hour. “We record 15-20 shows in one day for playback during the next month. Word has it we’re going to expand with the Local Edition showing every half-hour.” Susan said the interesting thing about the production day is she must change her wardrobe 15-20 times to make each interview unique.

This lively young anchor began her career as a TV anchor at the ABC affiliate in Kennewick. She has also worked at stations in Spokane, Bellingham and Northwest Cable News. Her contact with the BBRC was to interview Rourke O’Brien on his new venture with America’s Foundation for Chess, a program in several schools in the Puget Sound area.

Susan took this speaking opportunity to share some of her “horrible experiences” in the early stages of her career. “I was 23 years old, just out of the UW and this was my first job. I was sent to do a story about the State Patrol emphasizing the use of seat belts. I’d never been pulled over by a Trooper, so I was taken by those cute little bow ties they wear. So, I said to the Sergeant, ‘Are you going to the prom?’ He didn’t take kindly to my remarks. Just a week later, I was promoted to anchor. That meant I was producer, writer, editor, photographer and teleprompter operator. My first headline story was a nice little article about Yosemite Park. I knew better, but I started the newscast with a bad mispronunciation of the lead word Yos-emite! My friend the Trooper was watching that night, and for the time I was in Kennewick, he never let me forget it!” READ MORE

Celebrate April Fools

x0404FoolsThree fools from the BBRC produced a shtick that was as dippy as they come. But, when the smoke cleared, $237 dollars went into Sergeant Jenny’s depository. John Mix, the Chief Fool, led off with a story that he was moving to Bellevue Idaho. He was going to start a new Breakfast Rotary Club and guess what its name would be?

Jan Nestler told the crowd she also was moving to Hollywood to be a member of SAG, the Screen Actor’s Guild. Mix has a contract to provide her with fresh sagebrush from Idaho.

John DeWater told the funniest story and won the academy award from SAG, which wasn’t given because collecting the money was much more fun. Oh well, it was a great time-waster and fit in perfectly with the mood of the day.

BBRC Adopts a Highway

BBRCAdoptahwyRevisedThe Washington State Department of Transportation informed Chip Erickson that the sign promoting “Adopt A Highway” has been erected along I-405 in downtown Bellevue with the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club prominently displayed. Plans for the first clean-up are being made, pending selection of a date. A maximum of 15 people are needed for the project, with the WDOT providing all of the supplies, including vests, hard hats, signs, bags and lattes. Or was it margaritas?

Kudos to Chip Erickson for taking this project all the way to fruition!

Painting Party Set

Steve Luplow, mouthpiece for the Community Service committee announces the annual spring painting party will take place at one of the BBRC’s favorite organizations, the Eastside Adult Day Services in Bellevue. The club’s very first project was a painting and fix-up day at EADS nearly 20 years ago. Now history repeats itself. There’s a make-up awaiting all members who participate. Wear your paint clothes and be at EADS on Saturday, April 23 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Contact Luplow for more details or sign-up on the form provided at your table on Friday.
