The Challenge of the Foster Child

JaniceAveryMadeline Gauthier, Community Service Committee Chair, introduced Janice Avery, Executive Director of TreeHouse, the organization the BBRC has supported for several year. Janice chose to speak not so much about TreeHouse — which helps foster kids to acquire some of the special things in life, like luggage, toiletries, and clothing.

“I adopted two children from foster care. I’ve been a social worker all my life and I’ve been involved with kids in foster care as my primary work.” Janice had her audience imagine that they were a teenager in a family where’s a lot of dysfunction, maybe even violence. “One day, someone comes and takes you away from your home. There’s no due process, here. You have few basic rights, and no contact with your family or school, or your job. The whole purpose is to make sure you are safe. This is what comes out of households where things are not going well. The parents are in chaos. It’s not your fault, and you are taken into custody with just the clothes on your back.” READ MORE

Duvall Rotary Club Announces Charter Celebration

Culminating a long, arduous path, the members of the Rotary Club of Duvall will celebrate their chartering on Wednesday evening, June 2. Club President-Elect Chuck Burke has secured the Willows Lodge in Woodinville for the charter night celebration of the BBRC’s extension club in Duvall. The celebration will begin at 6:00 p.m.

The banquet room is restricted to 140 people, so the sooner you inform Brian Evison of your interest in attend this celebration the better.

This event marks an occasion when we will be the sponsoring club for the very first time in BBRC history and it will be a momentous occasion.

I hope many of you will be there to extend our hand to the formation of this new club.

It is anticipated that the cost will be $50 per person.

It is time to celebrate!

Ninth Annual Golf Outing on the Horizon

DickBrownDick Brown, Chair of the Golf Outing Committee, officially kicked off the run up to July 9, when the BBRC will again sponsor its very successful Golf Day at Mt. Si Golf Course. “At this event, we net enough to buy the car, which we then raffle off. This sporting event is for everybody ... you don’t have to be a golfer! No skill level is required. There is a great barbecue, wonderful weather already ordered in advance, so you should start pulling together your foursomes and get registered soon.” Dick also described some of the accessories that each participant will acquire.

The Committee has worked diligently to make this a premier event, so mark your calendars for Friday, July 9, at the Mt. Si course. There will be no regular BBRC meeting at Glendale that morning.

Centennial Project Takes Shape

NormJohnsonNorm Johnson, President-Elect and Chair of the Centennial project reported that the “Accessible Play/Spray Park for the City of Bellevue is working its way rapidly through the process.” Norm said the Memo of Understanding (MOU) should be completed by the city by May 7 and submitted to the BBRC board for approval on May 11. Jamaica has agreed to be director of pace-setter gifts, and Jane Kuechle will head up major gifts.

Once the MOU has been completed, the project will go before the Bellevue City Council in June.

As a side note, Norm mentioned that Steve Peters’ Vocation at Work Committee will be conducting Mock Interviews this Tuesday from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. at Hopelink. “The committee needs a couple more members to help out. Please contact Steve.”

This will be wrapped around our Siete de Mayo celebration and the recognition of the return of our prodigal daughter Robin Stark! Don’t miss this really full morning of entertainment, smiles and reflective emphasis. Bring a guest, a potential member. 7:00 a.m. Buffet Breakfast, 7:15 early start to meeting, 7:45 Ethics Panel, all at the Glendale Country Club, home of the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club!

Admin Corner
Everyone better be in their best bib and tucker for the appearance of the fabled Robin Stark and daughter Dallas on Friday! Robin is the heart and soul of the BBRC and is responsible for making much of the club go. Don’t miss this first-ever event — well, almost first-ever. She attended a meeting in Bellevue’s Wintergarden a long time ago to hear Tom Flores, then coach of the Seahawks talk. Other than a whirlwind visit which included an Anniversary Dinner in Seattle, this is her third official visit. Fill up the room, celebrate Siete de Mayo and learn about how to be ethical ... where else but the BBRC?
