Great Secrets of Leadership

Trask2An internationally-acclaimed speaker on human potential, Bob Trask, was the BBRC guest speaker Friday. Involved in such activities as wilderness guide, writer, scuba diver, Bob has made presentations all over the world, particularly to corporations and their employees. He founded a non-profit organization called ARAS Foundation.

“Leadership is something about business,” he said. “It’s more than a ministry, because, if we’re listening, we’re called to leadership by a spiritual voice. We are called upon by our families who look to us for leadership.”

Bob asked, "How many 6- or 7-year-old kids are paying attention to you? Well, you’d be surprised how well they pay attention to you. It’s called being accountable, and the wake we leave behind truly affects people. I call it the ‘Ripple Award,’ where we deliberately drop the pebble to make ripples and they go out and touch people. We never know who will feel one of our ripples, so keep making ripples.”

So, what are the Great Secrets of Leadership?

There are two secrets: “One is vision. What is my purpose for being alive? There’s got to be something going on that brings you here ... as individuals, we are truly unique. There will never ever be another you. So, be who you are. Find your purpose ... a vision. In other words, what turns you on?”

Bob related how he’d talked with a man who was soon to die. He asked him, "Have you any regrets ... if you could live your life over, what would you do?" The man said, "Yes, I wish I could do this inconsequential thing ... I wish I’d built my boat. How do you make a boat that has beautiful lines but will float? This is what I needed to do to fulfill my life." Leadership is vision. It’s making sure people know your vision ... this great spiritual puzzle. Get the vision that you’re born with. Then get a mission.

The second great leadership secret is making your life an offering. In Corinthians, the Bible says, "Go and forgive your brother, then you can return with your offering." If we aren’t good with our brother, our offering will have no meaning.

“The most magnificent philanthropic mission on this planet is Rotary. Now, that’s an offering to the temple! I bless my life through my offering ... I need more resources, more creativity ... I need to be blessed. But first, go forgive your brother. The one, big powerful matrix we can use is called Grace. If there’s something wrong, none of the blessings will work.”

Understanding this element of the offering is to understand forgiving. Bob said, “When I was 15 years old, I shot and killed my brother. It was an accident, but I struggled for 25 years ... I was filled with guilt. What does forgiveness mean? If I could go back and change my life, I would not. That’s forgiveness. Take my energy off of the burden and move on. The power comes back on. The offering is welcomed at the temple.”

TraskEvisonAccept the past, forgive and accept, and hold the vision. That’s leadership. Just being the unique, individual person you were born to be. Joy, power and brilliance. Tim Moriarty was called forward to read the invocation once again, a prayer for peace. “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.”

However you see God, God is your source. He is your source. Unlimited power and grace flows through you every day. Move forward and do great things together!

Bob was asked how one zeroes in on his/her vision. “Adults have trouble getting their vision. I’ve done this exercise before and it works. Next to your bed, place a notebook and, upon rising, contemplate this: what would I want to spend today doing? Write your answer on separate pages. Continue this process each day for 30 days. Don’t look at what you’ve written down. After 30 days, tear out the pages and look at them. A theme will develop. That would be your vision.”

For his presentation, Bob Trask was given a certificate denoting the BBRC’s gift of a book for a special child in our area in his name. Our thanks to Peter Stadelman for his introduction.
