District Centennial Project

GordonDarbyAs if on cue, Gordon Darby, current President of the Issaquah Rotary Club, took the mike to explain District 5030’s Centennial Project partnering with Habitat with Humanity to build three new homes in King County in the coming year. The project coincides with Rotary’s 100th Anniversary on February 23, 2005.

Darby said, "Each club and district has a Centennial project. Led by District Governor-Elect Kathy Johnson — who is also an Issaquah Rotarian — each of the Habitat homes engages the families selected to receive the home by requiring them to donate 500 hours toward the building of the structure. The home’s fall in the $180,000 price range.”

Several corporate sponsors have joined in the project, including Stimson Lane, the purveyor of the Columbia Crest Grand Estates award-winning wine, a Rotary Centennial edition available now for November delivery. Two thousand cases will be made available, with 600 cases committed so far.

Darby also said a ground-breaking ceremony for the first Habitat project will take place in May. The District is still seeking other corporate sponsors and in-kind partners to help make this project a reality. Such vendors as electrical, plumbing, and building contractors who may be looking for highly visible projects to partner are critical to the overall success. Rotarians who have connections with companies who are candidates for partnerships should contact Darby.

RBC Dain Raucher has committed $25,000 to the Centennial project marking Rotary’s 100th anniversary, the 100th home built for Habitat for Humanity in Washington and Columbia Crest’s 20th Anniversary. “This promises to be a fine project for our District and we hope that all Rotarians will consider pitching in and helping build these homes when the calls comes,” said Darby.
