District Conference Coming

Are you a DKNAR? That’s a phrase we just made up here at Reveille that stands for “Don’t Know Nuthin’ About Rotary.” Talk to anyone who has attended an annual District Conference and you’ll find them to be the most committed Rotarians, mainly because they’ve learned what Rotary is really all about. Once again, members of the BBRC have the opportunity to broaden their horizons by attending the District 5030 Conference, set for May 3-5 at Whistler, B.C. Past President Cary Kopczynski told the Club the conference begins Friday, May 3, and ends on Sunday, the 5th. “In order to qualify for a Presidential Citation, we need to send at least 17 members to qualify for the required 15% of club,” said Kopczynski.

This is Governor Bob Wilson’s swan song, where accomplishments of this past year will be reviewed and highlighted. The theme is “Soar to New Heights,” in the rarefied atmosphere of one of the continent’s most heralded resort areas, the Whistler Conference Center, Whistler, B.C.

Lodging in Whistler includes The Delta Whistler Resort, which is conference headquarters, or the nearby Coast Whistler Hotel. Contact hotels individually  for your reservations:

If you’re driving, take Exit 275 (about a mile from the border) off I-5 onto Pacific Highway. This border crossing is known as the “Truck Crossing.” Driving directions are available on the Conference promotional sheets.

For those of you who love trains and would like to sidestep the hassle at the border, there is a space-limited Amtrak/Charter Bus transportation system available both Thursday, May 2, and Friday, May 3. The Amtrak Cascade Train leaves Seattle at 7:45 a.m. and Edmonds at 8:13 a.m. and arrives in Vancouver at 11:40 a.m. You avoid long delays at the border because custom officers ride the train, thus eliminating the need to stop while crossing into Canada and back into the U.S.

Chartered buses will take Rotarians to Whistler, arriving about 2:30 p.m. On the train, several cars will be reserved for our group. There is dining car service, as well as a snack bar, on board.

On the return trip, Sunday, May 5th, the buses will leave Whistler at 2:00 p.m. and take passengers directly to the train station in Vancouver. The train leaves at 6:00 p.m. and will arrive in Edmonds at 9:05 p.m. and in Seattle at 9:55 p.m.

Roundtrip price for adults is $80 per person, $60 for children ages 2-15. Payment is by check only. Make all checks payable to GLOBAL EXPRESS TRAVEL. All payments are nonrefundable, and March 15 is the deadline for registration and payment.

Rudy Jones is Trip Coordinator, PO Box 142, Edmonds, 98020. Please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope for your acknowledgment and tickets. Questions? Call Rudy Jones at (425) 775-6582.

A reminder: it is required that you have proper identification to cross the border. You must have either a valid birth certificate, a passport, or a military I.D. card.

As usual, time is of the essence when planning and registering for these events. Make your plans soon and get your reservations in. The District Conference is the time when you become a Rotarian. We all need this experience!
