In ceremonies on August 21, 2001, the Rotary Club of Rio de Janeiro, linked with the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club, completed the RI matching grant which brought about installation of new equipment for the Cancer Hospital of Rio de Janeiro.

Brian Evison, Past Chairman of the BBRC International Committee, along with Christa Bohnhof-Gruhn, President of the Rio Club, worked to complete the project. The grant was coordinated by Rotary International’s Matching Grant Program. The BBRC’s contribution was $3,000. The equipment purchased by the grant will be used for “research of minimum residue illness of patients with ‘BCR-ABL’ before and after medulla transplantation to test the amounts of ‘PCR.’ This technique allows a quick and reliable diagnosis and prognosis with a sensibility to detect and to quantify the presence of malignant cells resistant to treatment.” The hospital administration and staff were grateful for the gift of equipment.

President Bohnhof-Gruhn, in her letter to the BBRC, said, “You may be assured that our mutual project is of great importance to the Cancer Institute and that it has only been possible to realize it because of your club’s participation and confidence in our club’s activities. Our sincerest thanks to you, Brian, and all your colleagues at the BBRC for your most valuable help.”
