Preserve Planet Earth

RuleAlex Rule, of Preserve Planet Earth Committee, commented on the rousing Red Sox World Series win and then said he was only going to take three minutes to share a story, and in the process, extend an invitation for everyone to participate in the BBRC Preserve Planet Earth Work Party, to be held November 6th, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The feedback of members who have participated in the past has always been positive, and it has a special impact on children, teaching them the life-long importance of stewardship of our land.

Alex reminded us that we live in a gorgeous part of the world, but we must take time to nurture it and appreciate it. He shared a story of his youth, when, as a seventh grader-playing hockey, he noticed some rotting tires by a pond. He mentioned it to a teacher, and the teacher challenged him, “What are you going to do about it?” Alex proceeded to create stickers to be passed out to clean up “Pat’s Pond.” Recently Alex returned to the sight and where once there was a garbage dump, there now stands a beautiful spread of birch trees. The highlight of the story was that Alex ran into his teacher on this trip and they both relived the meaningful and moving experience of many years ago.

Thanks to a little encouragement from his teacher, Alex continues to be passionate about land and stewardship issues.

Directions to Preserve Planet earth Work party:

From Willows Road in Redmond, turn east onto NE 95th ST. then east (left) onto 153rd Ave NE. Park in towards the end of the street on the road. There should be ample parking, but there are also numerous business parking lots that will be empty. After parking, walk to the gravel road at the end of the road beneath the power lines. At the “Y” veer right past the gate and towards the Sammamish River. You should see Alex and his big white van.

Saturday, November 6, is the date set aside for work along the Sammamish River between Redmond and Woodinville. “We need 15-20 helpers,” according to Alex Rule and Ron Healey. Environmental stewardship has been one of the BBRC’s long-standing goals and has successfully been pursued along the banks of the Sammamish.
