The Rotary Foundation:
Doing What it Does Best

DeasyFoundationDon Deasy gave the pitch for members letting the club know their intention for foundation giving. “More than a third of our membership has opted in to our Foundation program. This month’s billing will have a pledge sheet enclosed. We hope you’ll make your decision by the end of this year, so we’ll be able to anticipate how well our program is going.”

As an indication of the kind of projects that the Foundation supports, Kim Shrader, chair of the World Community Service committee asked the committee members to stand and be recognized. “As you can see, they are all men. We’d like to recruit some of you nice women members to be a part of our important deliberations.” Kim introduced Dave Weaver, past president of the University Rotary Club.

Dave explained that a wonderful project is unfolding that involves 17 clubs of District 5030, plus 3 or 4 other districts. “This multi-club project will provide the funds necessary to dig 23 new wells in villages in Ethiopia. Because of the difficult problems of drought, the people of Ethiopia have a real need for good, clean, safe water. Over 500,000 children die each year from problems related to poor water.”

Weaver said that “it’s hard to know how well your money is spent, so the project coordinators have engaged Water Partners International, an organization that has dug wells for the past 14 years and has 100% of them still operating. We will partner with all five Rotary clubs in Ethiopia. Our goal is to raise $200,000 for this project, with funds coming also from the Rotary Foundation. Hundreds of thousands of people’s lives are at stake. You can be proud that the BBRC is one of the participating clubs.”

At this point, Margie Burnett rushed into the room with the $5,000 check. Margie was traveling that morning from Olympia and the traffic pattern broke down.

Thanks to Don Deasy, Don Chandler, Kim Shrader and Margie Burnett for teaming up on this presentation ... and to Dave Weaver for spearheading this ambitious project.
