THIS WEEK

An important program, drawing interest from guests and the local media. The topic is “Business Ethics-The Boeing Company” with Ed Carr, Boeing’s Director of Ethics and Business Conduct. This is a banner program. Bring a guest along, perhaps a prospective member. 7:00 buffet breakfast at the Glendale Country Club, 140th & Main St, Bellevue. (Cameron)

ADMIN CORNER

Nearly 50% of the membership has entered their new data in the BBRC’s Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Directory. If you haven’t visited the Member’s Only section, do so today, follow the instructions, fill out the form (remember to move around the form by using the “Tab” key) and after completing your work, click on the “Submit” button ONLY ONCE!

The Fourth Quarter (in Rotary terms) is 1/3 done. This is a critical quarter, because it’s signals the final 90 days of the Rotary Year. If you want your Paul Harris contribution to count, you need to have your check to Don Chandler or Don Deasy or Dick Brown no later than May 31. If you’re on the club’s PH Pledge program, be sure to clear your account as soon as possible so your payment will be made to RI. Do this today! And thanks!

Classification Talk: Hans Giner

x0502GinerHans Giner became the first BBRC Rotarian to give a classification talk without having a classification! He’s in between, and his new request — Importing/Marketing Wine — hasn’t been approved yet. Still, Hans can weave an interesting tale, no matter what the subject! Notice the clever way he intertwined the 4-Way Test into his introduction. He told his audience that he was able to put his life down on six cards, representing six decades. Hans was born and raised in Sweden. When he was about ten years old, he contracted tuberculosis. A new serum had just been discovered and he was the first guinea pig. Obviously, it worked and Hans is still with us.

Hans earned degrees at the University in Sweden, joined the Army and has seven children. He went from the Army to the private sector, from Human Relations to Electronics, then to Business School and a job in Swedish industry. He joined Rotary in 1975 and even brought along a roster of members in Rotary that year (Page 170!). His classification was Industrial Electronics Marketing.

Hans worked for Nokia and located in the Pacific Northwest as a company marketing rep. The emphasis was on satellite dishes, to bring television signals to large audiences. For instance, his company built a private cable system to multi-dwelling units in Glasgow, Scotland, serving 176,000 subscribers.

But now, Hans has had a taste of the American Dream. A chance to engage in other things. He joined the BBRC back in the early 90’s ... ”Who sponsored me? Does anyone remember?” No takers.

In 1993, Hans became an American by choice, married Catherine (whom he brought along for support Friday morning), and had a “new bride, a new life and more children!” The family spent three years in Singapore and on to Holland for four more years, before returning to recapture the Dream. Now, Hans has formed a new company, Chateau St. Martin, a French wine importing business. “We are doing what we always wanted to do.”

Maybe next time, Hans will sing another of his Swedish wine tasting songs with his traditional gusto!
