Ken Colling is CEO of Goodwill Industries. This organization has carved out success with 80 years of recycling wanted items and thus building new lives. Hear his story Friday at 7:00 a.m. at the Glendale Country Club.

ADMIN CORNER

Upcoming meetings of the BBRC would make great introductions to prospective new members. On March 11, Frank Enfinger will explain computer forensics and investigations; On March 18, Lisa Schmidt and Alex Rule will team up to explore “Workplace Wellness”, followed by a very interesting look at the Patterson Creek camp, which assists special needs kids and their families. Plan to bring a guest with an eye to inviting them to join the BBRC. Remember individuals are asked to become Rotary members by invitation, and you’re the inviter!

BBRC Welcomes New Members
Hendershott and Kippen

x0228NewMbrsCarleen Buty introduced new BBRC member Greg Hendershott. Hooray! Another lawyer. [Your temporary editor was feeling lonely because there were, for a short time, as many “Steves” in the club as there were lawyers.] This reinforces the corollary to our motto “You are ALL always welcome at the BBRC,” which now reads, “Especially more lawyers!” Greg’s classification will be “Law Practice Employment.”

Greg is from a small town in Michigan and for some unknown reason, he didn’t choose to follow in the tradition of his father and grandfather, who were both physicians. Carleen mentioned that “... then he married his wife ...” For those of us sitting in the back, we noticed the spontaneous eruption of heckling such as, “Good move who else would he marry?”

Greg has been active in a variety of community service activities, especially performing legal pro bono work. Greg is co-sponsored by Jane Kuechle and Bob Moloney.

Bill Brooks introduced new member Rodd Kipper, classification "Engineer Quantity Supervisor." Bill pointed out a very bizarre coincidence: Rodd had also married his wife! Go figure. W are the chances of having that happen with both new members all in one day?

Rodd and his wife, Noreen, moved to America from South Africa eight years ago, when his she informed him they had won the “immigration lottery.” They have three children, and they were naturalized as U.S. citizens last August. Bill pointed out that if Rodd had joined then, he might have gotten credit for two new members: Rodd has proudly lost about 120 pounds in recent months, and he is now just a shadow of his former “selves.” Rodd is an avid golfer and bird watcher. Clearly, he’ll fit right in with his great sense of humor.

[During these introductions, the gifts began flowing, and your temporary editor apologizes for being awestruck by the gift-giving and the literary license taken with this recount.] Let’s review some of the welcoming gifts these fine new Rotarians received:

First, they each received a Rotary pin. Good start! Did I say “pin?” I meant pins. They also received centennial pins and District 5030 pins.

Next, Norm provided each member with a BBRC hat and the book, “ABCs of Rotary.”

Wait, it doesn’t stop there! Then they got BBRC flags to take to their make-up meetings. They also received Rotary certificates to hang in their work places.

Of course, no collection is complete without the BBRC Ops Manual, almost certainly personally autographed by producer and Past President Cary Kopczynski.

Finally, they received BBRC leather luggage in which to haul all of their new possessions.

I’m sure it won’t stop there; Norm was pressed for time, so we had to move on without presenting the rest of their gifts. Next week, I’m sure they will also receive the following: Miscellaneous Boy Scout merit badges, and a junior fire marshall pin. Of course, to hang all these pins and awards, they will need an official merit badge sash from either the Boy or Girl Scouts. They will also need the official BBRC shovel, with which to move all their new possessions around from one pile to another in their home or office. The shovel will also come in handy for the Preserve Planet Earth tree planting projects each fall. Also, they will receive the official BBRC watch, so that they won’t be late for meetings, along with built-in GPS so that they can find their way to Glendale, or along the rough in our occasional BBRC golf tourneys.

Speaking of golf, we cannot forget the complimentary sleeve of BBRC golf balls, golf tees, and golf towel. And, because we are giving golf accessories, we must also provide a new official BBRC golf club bag. I’m sure the gifts won’t stop there, but suffice it to say that each new member will receive their choice of an official BBRC wheelbarrow or a gift certificate from Ryder Trucks to haul their loot home.

Woe be any new member who is caught without the essentials. You could be fined, for not wearing your pin, or pins, or badge, or maybe even your hat, or not knowing your ABCs ... Message to Judge Jenny: "Think of the financial opportunities!"
