THIS WEEK

Ken Colling is CEO of Goodwill Industries. This organization has carved out success with 80 years of recycling wanted items and thus building new lives. Hear his story Friday at 7:00 a.m. at the Glendale Country Club.

ADMIN CORNER

Upcoming meetings of the BBRC would make great introductions to prospective new members. On March 11, Frank Enfinger will explain computer forensics and investigations; On March 18, Lisa Schmidt and Alex Rule will team up to explore “Workplace Wellness”, followed by a very interesting look at the Patterson Creek camp, which assists special needs kids and their families. Plan to bring a guest with an eye to inviting them to join the BBRC. Remember individuals are asked to become Rotary members by invitation, and you’re the inviter!

The Friday Program:
BBRC Blessed by the Visit of an Angel

x0228TisdaleFor those of you who missed this meeting, you missed a rare BBRC moment. We were indeed blessed by the visit of an angel.

This angel is Betty Tisdale, founder and president of HALO. This organization is dedicated to bettering the lives of orphans and at-risk children around the world, especially in developing countries, such as Vietnam, Columbia and Afghanistan. She is world-famous for her rescue of 219 orphans (plus her five adopted Vietnamese children) from Al Loc orphanage during the fall of Saigon in 1975. During her short time with the BBRC, Betty shared her amazing story through a documentary video by Tom Brokaw and a short recap in her own words. READ MORE

Announcements

Remember the upcoming BBRC retreat. Sign up now!

Nick Paget announces that we have four RYLA participants this year that is more than we’ve had in quite some time!

Don’t forget the New Member Committee meeting with Wayne at Jitters this week.

Des Moines Rotary is having their annual wine fundraiser March 12th and 13th.

Greetings from our semi-retired members:
• Earl Falk is doing well and sends his best to the club.

• Paul Juul is living at Brighton Gardens retirement home on Northup Way. Despite his battle with Alzheimer’s, he is physically healthy, and the diet of the good life appeals to him, because he’s put on a couple of pounds since the last time we’ve seen him. Nevertheless, he’s the same old good natured Paul.

Don Deasy’s Looking Good!

x0228DeasyPresident Norm pointed out that Don Deasy was back among us and looking well. As you saw in last week’s edition, Don has continued his cancer treatments as an outpatient. It’s great to have Don among us and looking healthier all the time.

Don, in his typical spirit, stood up and fined himself for running into Sergeant At Arms Judge Jenny away from the club and mistakenly calling her Wendy. Oops! He laid $20 down as his preemptive payment, hoping that Jenny won’t nail him too badly when she gets back. Unfortunately for Don, we aren’t telling Jenny he paid, and she wouldn’t think $20 was enough for the slight anyway.

Stay tuned for an interesting exchange next week.

Mercer Island Rotary Goes On the Run

MarathonJim Trombold visited the BBRC to hype the Mercer Island Rotary’s 33rd consecutive Rotary Run.

“This is our annual fundraiser and features a half marathon run and walk; an 8-K Classic Run/Walk and a Kids’ Dash. It all happens on Sunday, March 20, with the various events getting underway as early as 7:30 that morning. The Awards ceremony will take place at noon that day.

The Rotary Run will benefit a program of Colon Cancer Awareness. Registration details are available on this website.
