THIS WEEK

A U. S. Army update by Major General Jim Collins, Deputy Commander of Fort Lewis and I Corps. A current review of the nation’s military stature is his topic. Bring a guest who may be a potential member. Enjoy breakfast at 7:00 a.m. It all happens at the Glendale Country Club this Friday morning!

ADMIN CORNER

The Reveille staff is in need of help like, wow, we need a correspondent to cover a meeting later this month. Maybe Jim Kindsvater would turn over his camera to some other volunteer and Jim could be correspondent. Jim has terrific writing talents they are just covered up by his love for photography. This would allow Jim to sit at the back of the room and not have rotten vegetables thrown at him as he does his photo duty. This would allow some other fine Rotarian to see what they can do taking pictures. The need is for February 25th. If there’s no response to this “ad” by the end of the week, the Reveille editor will begin the process of alphabetizing the prospects. We will begin at “Goldfarb.” Please respond or forever rue the day. (Mark Hough is otherwise engaged that day, and Tom Helbling is also not available.)

The Friday Program:
The Pacific Rim Sports Summit

Walsh1A name synonymous with staging large community sporting events — Bob Walsh — was the BBRC’s speaker Friday morning, outlining plans for this summer’s Pacific Rim Sports Summit in venues throughout the Puget Sound. Walsh, of the Seattle Organizing Committee, was instrumental in bringing the Goodwill Games to Seattle in 1990.

Bob opened telling the first-person story of his observance of the legendary Bill Russell, Kim Shrader and Norm Johnson, all attending the Olympics in Moscow (Russia) in 1980. Lenin Stadium was completely sold out, but Kim and Norm watched intently as Bill Russell conned the gatekeepers. First, he went into the men’s room and donned shorts, got a garbage can lid and claimed he was a discus thrower from the U.S. They let him in.

Kim saw this, went into the men’s room, stripped down to his Jockey shorts, found a broom in the corner, stripped off the straw and told the gatekeeper he was with the U.S. Javelin Team. Kim got in.

Norm was taking all this in. He went to the men’s room, stripped to his boxer shorts, spotted some barbed wire, wrapped himself in the wire, presented himself to the gatekeeper. “I’m with the USA Fencing team.” (Walsh never said whether Norm got in the stadium!) READ MORE

Valentine

cupid2Just a reminder to all of the 80 people who have broken existing world records for sign-ups to the BBRC Valentine Dinners:

Held in ten members' homes, a group of guests will gather Saturday for an evening of fun, fellowship and food. Bob Moloney, bless his lil ol' Irish heart, has spearheaded this event ever since Valentine’s Day was invented. He is just beside himself, bursting with pride at the interest shown this year.

A very high percentage of members have attended this current or past dinners, and Bob's goal for next year is to attract 100 people! He is even working on an article to be submitted to The Rotarian telling the world how wonderful this program works.

Thanks to all who are participating. Have a great evening and smile pretty for the photographs!

Announcements of Note

Steve Lingenbrink asks the membership to put April 8 and 9 on their calendars for the BBRC Annual Planning Retreat. This year, the event will return to Semi-ah-moo Resort on Birch Bay. Success by each succeeding administration depends heavily on the input given by members at this retreat. In fact, the BBRC was one of the first Rotary clubs in our District to utilize the planning retreat as a tool to ensure continued success. Don’t miss this important event. Put your two cents worth in to the Lingenbrink Year.

Nick Paget reports that two of four slots have been filled to Rotary’s RYLA Seminar weekend at Pacific Lutheran University. March 3-6 are the dates. If you have a sophomore, junior or senior student in your household, they should be encouraged to attend this inspiring event. If you have no one of this age in your house, consider friends in the neighborhood who might qualify. Contact Nick for more details.

Remember, the Reveille needs an editor/writer for February 25. Please contact the Club Administrator with your affirmative answer. Don’t everybody rush now!

Thought for the week

Games are simulations of reality devised by man to hone skills and develop qualities useful in real life. The consequences of a game are not real, we just think they are. Yet, we continue to play as if the consequences were real. That is the true spirit of any game. Life is a game. (Thought inspired by W. Timothy Gallwey)
