Visiting Russian Scholars Need Hosts
There is a critical need to find host families for 100 high school students from the former Soviet states who will arrive in Seattle in mid-July. Elliott Bay Rotary is coordinating the home stays of these students, who will be in the area for four weeks. Some wonderful families have volunteered to host, but the sponsors need more. These students are here on scholarship from the US State Department to learn and observe our democratic society and the English language.
Every year the U.S. State Department, through the Office of Citizen Exchanges in the Education and Cultural Affairs Division, awards approximately 1,600 one-year scholarships to students from throughout Russia, the Central Asian Republics, and Eastern European nations. This is the Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX). From among these 1,600 students, approximately 100 students are selected for a 4-week intensive running start program called the Language and Cultural Enhancement program (LCE).
