Report on the District Conference

DisplayOwens Receives Rotarian of the Year Accolade

Past BBRC President Jim Owens received District 5030’s highest award, the District Rotarian of the Year for 2003-2004 at the recently completed District Conference. Jim has faithfully toiled in the Annual Giving trench, raising the bar every year he’s led the campaign for support of the Rotary Foundation. Contributions to this year’s drive are just shy of $500,000. There is a matching program available for Rotarians who haven’t given or who would like to give more. Learn more about that here in this issue. The BBRC can be proud of members like Jim Owens, who put his heart into Rotary. Congratulations, Jim. We are proud of YOU!

Conference Recap

President Evison gave a brief recap of the District Conference, held this year in Portland. Over 700 Rotarians gathered at the Portland Grand Hilton for the 2-day conference. Beginning mid-afternoon Friday, April 30, the BBRC had nine members attending.

Presidential Citations earned by the club this past year included patches for Growing Rotary, Foundation Support, Membership and Vocational Service.

PetersonTerry Peterson was one of the members who attended and gave his take on the Conference. “I began attending about five years ago and found the experience so good that I’ve made it a point to attend each year. The list of featured speakers was terrific. Arun Gandhi, grandson of India’s first prime minister gave a particularly moving talk. Lynn Brewer, the accountant who blew the whistle on Enron, and Past Rotary International President Rick King all gave inspiring messages. I particularly like the Rotary Sessions, where I learn what many of our District’s clubs are doing. And then, there are the District-wide projects that are outstanding. We were entertained by the Pink Martini Band and spent Sunday morning in the annual business meeting, followed by the passing of the torch to the next administration.

“So, why do I attend District Conference? First of all, it’s a spouse event, with lots of free time and activities that attract my spouse. For me, I get a sense of the size of Rotary, acquire a sense of pride in this wonderful organization and I get my batteries recharged for Rotary. Next year’s Centennial Conference will be held in Vancouver, B.C. I urge all of you to make your reservations for this great event!”
