The Nordstrom Path to Success

NordstromOne of the Northwest’s premiere retail companies was profiled by someone who carries on the tradition of its founder. Blake Nordstrom, President of Nordstrom, explained the current success of this Northwest icon.

Blake said he began work for the company in the shoe store when he was 17. “We reached a crossroads three years ago when it was decided to return the presidency to the Nordstrom family and return to the values which made our company great.” Since that time, Nordstrom has flourished.

Blake opened his talk by saying “I don’t live on the Eastside and I’m not a Rotarian. So, I’m not sure why you invited me to speak today. In my UW speech class, I was given the assignment of a report of some lyrics called ‘Sympathy for the Devil,’ written by Mick Jagger. After my oral report, the instructor said, ‘That was the worst report I’ve ever heard. Take my advice and stay away from public speaking!’ So, you can imagine my surprise when Steve Goldfarb called and asked if I’d speak this week. In our company we have a place where the markdowns go on sale ... that’s called the Rack. And, in Phoenix, we have a place where markdowns from the Rack go ... it’s called Last Chance. I guess I qualify for a Last Chance speaker!” READ MORE

BBRC Annual Giving Generous

RotaryFoundIn a rush to make the deadline for contributions during the current Rotary year, Foundation Chair Chuck Barnes announced that 44 members joined in the matching challenge for the month of April. A total of $12,290, including the match, was collected, with an additional $5,000 match from Peter Powell. A grand total of over $17,000 in April!

In previous years, the BBRC has stepped up to build a Foundation tradition that places it in the very highest company in the District. With 22 members yet to commit, Chuck is confident the club’s total Annual Giving will exceed $32,000. This effort puts the BBRC #4 in the District for Annual Giving, a lofty place indeed. This works out to be an average of $288 per member!

Another Match Until June 15

And now, comes news that an anonymous donor has offered to match any donation up to $100 from Rotarians who have not made Annual Fund contributions this year with 100 Recognition Points. This news comes from Jim Owens, the District Annual Giving Chair.

“This extra incentive gives each new donor 100 extra dollars of credit toward their next Paul Harris level.” This new matching program is open through June 15, the final day for processing Foundation gifts. As noted in a broadcast email, Chuck Barnes asks members who have not contributed to mail him their donations to his home address.

Just a reminder that in order to make your Rotary Foundation contribution count for this year’s campaign, it must be in Chuck Barnes’ hands no later than June 7 in order for him to meet the RI deadline for submission of June 15. Don’t miss out on making your contribution count! And thanks to all members who’ve gone beyond the great expectations and made this year’s campaign the most successful in the history of the BBRC! Congratulations to all!
