A Walk Down Memory Lane
Club Historian John Mix is charged by the Board of Directors to deliver some sort of historical account each year. Mix selected a look at previous club retreats as his topic on the day when the annual Club Retreat was scheduled. The program reviewed each retreat from an historical point of view. Mix challenged his audience to reveal "who it was that proposed the clubs first retreat?" Blank looks met the challenge. Mix responded by saying, I dont know who proposed the first retreat either ... I was hoping some of you might know! The annual Club Retreat has been part of the BBRCs fabric since the administration of Dick Clarke. The first retreat was held at Dr. Dan Brzuseks vacation home on Whidbey Island in May 1988. This was Jim Owens retreat, in preparation of his becoming president on July 1, 1988. From the get-go, the tradition of an overnight function held at a site away from the citys bright lights, mixed with a bit of golf and retail therapy, an awards dinner, ramping up to an evening of friendly card competition, leading to an intense four-hour planning window the next morning has resulted in a formula thats held true for 17 years. READ MORE Matching Gift Program Announced Chuck Barnes told members Friday that were now in the fourth quarter of the Rotary Year, which brings about the closing of the Annual Fund Campaign. Chuck challenged members who have not contributed to the Rotary Foundation this year that whatever amount they contribute, Chuck will match that amount. A "Two-Fer Special for gifts made in April. Dont miss out on this offer to double your contribution! Remember, the BBRC strives for 100% participation. The amount is not as important as is your commitment to join this most worthy of all foundations supported by the annual gifts of its members. Norm Johnson, having just returned from China, rose to give the club a PETS report. There were 530 new Presidents for 2004-2005 attending the annual SeaTac PETS (President Elect Training Seminar), one of many held around the globe during the spring. There were 700 Rotarians attending this intensive 4-day session. Past RI Presidents Rick King, Frank Devlin, and Cliff Dochterman were speakers. I met with 26 other club presidents in a group for clubs with 100 or more members. PETS is a wonderful experience and Im fully prepared to take the reins of the BBRC July 1. Norm also reported that the clubs Centennial Project has produced a Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Bellevue and the BBRC. The wording of the MOU has been given to the BBRC for review. Our intention is to study its contents with a special committee and consider approval at next weeks board meeting. The Master plan has been approved for the park by the City Council and the concept for project partnering has also been approved. BBRC Event Hats/Visors will go on sale April 16 for $10 per hat or visor. And they are really cool! There will be extras but sales are on a first-come, first-served basis each Friday through May 14 until all orders are fulfilled. Always a fun evening, the Fellowship Committee has announced the BBRC visit to the Village Theater in Issaquah on Thursday, April 22. Bob Moloney is handling details, which includes dinner at the nearby Mandarin Chinese Restaurant. After the meal, the group will walk to the theater, where tickets are $36 for adults and $32.40 for the MOST adult (seniors). This includes a 10% discount for bringing 10 to 30 people to the theater. Commitments for participation will be secured at this Friday's meeting, so talk it over with your partner and plan to attend a Night Out at the Village Theater for Man of LaMancha. Heres where you can dream your Impossible Dream! Thought for the Week History teaches us that men and nations behave wisely once they have exhausted all other alternatives.
