Club Gives Major Grant to Skiforall

SalvatoriFunds raised at last year’s raffle were disbursed Friday when the BBRC gave a check for $17,000 to Skiforall, a program that gives individuals with disabilities the opportunity to experience the outdoors in a variety of projects year round. Ed Bronsdon, an Issaquah Rotarian, is Executive Director of Skiforall, and he brought a sample of the special needs vehicles the organization offers to the disabled.

BronsdonTroyerThe program is called C.A.R.E.S, which stands for Custom Adaptive Recreation Events by Skiforall. Bronsdon explained that the BBRC major grant would be split in two areas: $10,500 to purchase a 20-foot trailer, matched by a $9,821 grant from Employees Recycling Program for adaptive cycles, and $6,500 in financial aid matched by $6,500 from Skiforall Gala Auction proceeds to sponsor 20 new Bellevue-based Custom Events, which will serve at least 300 children and adults with disabilities. A BBRC logo will appear on the trailer as a method of appreciation for the gift.

SpecEquipmentSkiforall is a program where adults can get involved as helpers when the events occur. Brondson introduced Ryan, suffering from Cerebral Palsy, who told his audience how much these events mean to him. Ryan was ecstatic as he described his first experience on a modified ski vehicle, allowing him to recline while “skiing downhill.” He obviously got a great charge out of the two people assigned to accompany him as they floundered in the snow trying to keep up!

The BBRC can be proud of its part in funding special projects throughout the community. A salute to Phil Salvatori’s Foundation Committee which work many weeks in the fall to determine where our money goes. And, a 21 4-Way-Test Salute to the remarkable diligence of BBRC members selling raffle tickets. More than $1 million has been raised for charitable causes over the past ten years.
