The Navy’s Impact in the Puget Sound Region

HerringRear Admiral Len Herring commands the Naval Surface Group Northwest and stopped by to tell the BBRC how the Navy is changing and the role this important segment of our nation’s military has on the economy of the region. Admiral Herring is a member of the Rotary Club of Seattle.

“The military in this region forms a good partnership with the people. Whether you served in the military before or know little about it, people are always interested in the future of America’s defense. From the founding of the U.S. Navy 228 years ago to today, the Navy has embarked on a new direction, one that will totally transform the service as we know it.”

Admiral Herring said the major mission of the Navy is to defend the Constitution, while taking a phrase from the Declaration of Independence to protect “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of All Threatening” to our way of life. The Navy has a global force, capable of striking any where, any time. “Today, one-half of our forces are deployed in harm’s way ... the Arabian Sea, the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean, Western Pacific, and now Haiti.” READ MORE

Rotary Minute: Rourke O'Brien

OBrienRourke O’Brien lifted some material from an early Reveille, dated February 13, 1989, to show that some things never change. During a club assembly devoted to membership, the BBRC met to consider how to grow the club. “They were trying to add new members to reach 110,” said Rourke. “The club was admonished to look at people they know, their co-workers, neighbors, good friends, and determine whether they’d make good Rotarians. Lists of open classifications were available to help fill the void.” The highest number of members attained by the BBRC has been 120 on two occasions. Today, we’ve dropped below 110. It’s time to build our numbers back up, Rourke surmised. If you have questions on how to do that, get in touch with Rourke.

A March Madness Membership Drive

Mbr1Bill Schultheis rose to whip up interest in the March Membership Drive, which was touted to have a prize of a 17-carat gold Rolex Watch, donated by Goldfarb Jewelers.

Steve Luplow, manager at Ben Bridge Jeweler in Bellevue Square, joined the fray saying his firm would offer an “18-carat-gold Rolex watch” to the person who brought in the most new members this month. Andrew Face jumped up to offer three, brightly colored watches as gifts to winners.

Bill urged the club to invite friends and colleagues “who you’d like to see every Friday morning” as members of the BBRC.

(Your editor cautions the membership to listen carefully when these promotions come down the line. When he retired from active work in the marketplace, the club gave him a “Rolodex” watch, which he proudly wore on his wrist for a few moments. It proved to be too bulky, but it held a lot of names and addresses. It was not a good time-teller!)
