President Kim Shrader opened the meeting with the introduction of Carol Hoeft, who gave the invocation and led the pledge to the flag. Chuck Barnes greeted three visiting Rotarians: Valoree Dowell, Seattle #4 Rotary and Kemper Freeman and Diane Tebelius, both from Bellevue Rotary.
Kim noted that Sunday, February 23, is the 98th Anniversary of the Founding of Rotary and has been designated World Peace & Understanding Day. Two years hence, Rotarians will gather in Chicago to mark the 100th Anniversary of the world’s largest and finest service organization.
President Kim read an email from Marcia DeCosta, thanking the Club for “kind words and beautiful flowers.” She said that several people have asked how they could help and she responded that “they could make donations to Rotary, what I believe Daniel would think appropriate.” Marcia said she went to the Club website last week and saw the Thought for the Week from Albert Einstein, “Only a life lived for others is worth living.” “By chance, this was the same quote that the family chose to be added to Daniel’s obituary in Germany. He had the same IQ as Einstein and read lots and lots of his theories. Thank you, all of Daniel’s friends.”
President-Elect Brian Evison alerted the membership that the RI Convention, set to convene in Brisbane, Australia, June 1-4, has attracted a large turnout and “accommodations in Brisbane are becoming difficult to find. For those interested in accompanying me to the Land Down Under, please contact me as soon as possible.”
