Service Above Self Award (L-R): DG Rosemary Aragon, Norm & Carolyn Johnson

President Kim Shrader called the meeting to order, and Norm Johnson gave the invocation. Special guests included District 5030 Governor Rosemary Aragon and her husband, Luis; founding member Norris Bevan and his wife, Meta Lou; and friends of Sadru Kabani, Zul Alibhai and his wife, Radhida Alibhai. Zul is Past President of a Rotary Club in Nairobi, Kenya, and his son is Karim Alibhai, a dentist living in Bellevue.

Rosemary Aragon recognized Jim Owens, Margie Burnett, and Kim Shrader for their participation on the polio immunization program in Ethiopia.

Rosemary and Kim presented the Rotary Service above Self Award to Norm Johnson. Just a few of Norm’s many contributions to Rotary include chairing the annual golf tournament; work on the Rotary Foundation, being one of the top raffle sellers for the last ten years, serving on the BBRC board for five years, and serving on the District Conference Committee of Rotary sessions. Norm received a bouquet of Forget-Me-Not flowers and an Unsung Hero plaque with the inscription “Sow the Seeds of Love.”

The Giving Tree

Phil Salvatori arrived with the Annual Giving Tree in tow. It contains 125 gift ornaments, 75 of which go to Hopelink and 50 to the YMCA. As long as there are ornaments left, the tree will be at each meeting throughout the holiday season. Please take one or more. Gifts numbered 1-75 require no wrapping; gifts numbered 75-125 do require wrapping. Please let Phil know which tags you have taken.

President-Elect Brian Evison announced that, with 95% of the funds accounted for, it looks as if the raffle will net approximately $110,000. Brian thanked the stalwarts of the Raffle Committee: Wendi Fischer, Don Deasy, Jim Zidar, Kevin Jewell, Chris Monger, Paul Martin, Robin Callan, and Andrew Face.

The winner of the Jetta is Bellevue periodontist C.R. Anderegg, a good friend of member Mike Hyodo. Indeed, Mike sold C.R. the winning ticket.

Paul Harris Awards (L-R): Phil & Connie Salvatori, Chuck Barnes, Jean & Kim Shrader

C.R. thanked the group for the pleasure of winning the car and promptly announced that he would donate the car back to the BBRC for such uses as the Club sees fit. This is the true Rotary spirit at work!

Chuck Barnes presented Paul Harris Awards to the better halves on Kim Shrader and Phil Salvatori, Jean and Connie, respectively.

Chuck Barnes was then presented with the prestigious District 5030 Mike Shanahan Award. Mike was one of the founders of Northwest Harvest. Chuck has worked for years distributing food through Hopelink and other organizations. This award is certainly well-deserved. Way to go, Chuck!

Club historian, John Mix, who could not attend, had provided a nice email synopsis of significant events in the founding of the BBRC. Four past Presidents, Don Chandler, Dick Brown, Howard Johnson, and Cary Kopczynski provided a few highlights from their terms as President.

Don Chandler particularly recalled the adoption of the “Preserve Planet Earth” motto, which has been put to good use since then by the BBRC. Dick Brown recalled the birth and death of the strawberry cooler; Howard Johnson recalled some of the infamous sales techniques of member Ted Szatrowski; and Cary Kopczynski recalled the inception of the motto “Best Rotary Club in the World.”

President Kim thanked these members for putting on a great event: Steve Lingenbrink, Peter Powell, Suzanne Goff; Dan Lewis, and Sayoko Powell.
