President Steve Goldfarb, caught in the crossfire of a worldwide transportation system shutdown, was forced to layover in Venice, Italy for an extra four or five days, until flights were restored. His only complaint was that his shoes got wet when the tide came in while he was enjoying lunch at San Marco Square. Seems that Venice is having a slight “sinking” problem, but Steve reported that authorities are rumored to have that stopped. Still, you might wear galoshes on your next trip to Venice.
Steve also remarked that his ten days in Italy showed the Italians giving respect to Americans. Each conversation after the attack was prefaced with “We’re sorry …” Italians were sorry for what these events have done to all the world. Goldfarb observed that it will take some time to get through customs at borders, security at airports, and football/baseball stadiums. “The attack was polar opposite to Rotary … we promote world peace and understanding. There is a greater appreciation of other races and religions since the terrorists struck. There is a greater respect for teachers, policemen, and firemen. People have risen to the occasion and stand behind our leaders. It’s Rotary’s time to come forward. Service above self has never been more appropriate.”
Steve Lingenbrink gave the invocation, a thoughtful and meaningful prayer for healing. Vince Lorrain greeted but one visiting Rotarian, but there were several guests present.
Jim Young reminded members that the BBRC Major Gift Committee (Foundation) will be meeting each Monday morning during October at 7:30, in Rick Klobucher’s office, Bellevue Place.
