Sergeant At Arms: The Powers Year

Jay Powers
Jay Powers starts his SAA year.

Jay Powers ascended to the role of Sergeant At Arms, receiving a nice round of applause. After the O’Brien Year, that was somewhat refreshing. Jay read the rules from the RI manual about what he is to do this coming year, stressing that he will work “to bring dignity to the chaos of the BBRC.” He noted that ROAR works (Ratting On A Rotarian) and began his tenure with a blanket $1.00 fine for all those not wearing their Rotary pin.

Jay singled out Brian Evison, who has just completed his first year of his EMBA at the UW. This brought about another of Powers’ jokes, which ended “The Koala Tea of Mercy is not strained.” You shoulda been there.

What followed then was a “rolling Happy Birthday,” as SAA Powers hit the piano with the world’s most famous song. Except the folks in the far southern end of the room didn’t get the opening cue, so the world’s most famous song became the World’s Biggest Round. Happy birthday to all our good friends who celebrate July birthdays. [See list in a previous Reveille, Vol. 14, No. 01, JUL 2, 2001.]
