World Community Service Update
|
The World Community Service Committee is currently pursuing many projects, with a focus on these four:
- Building a storage shelter at the Hand of Help Orphanage in Botosani, Romania. The orphanage needs to have a storage for donated
clothes, dry foods, and other items to dispense to the poor, widows, and orphans in this city of 100,000 people an 85% unemployment rate and average salaries of $100 per month. The approximate cost
for the shelter will be $5,000. We are looking for any other clubs in our district who might want to contribute and be involved in this project. Mike Hyodo will be returning to this city next year.
- A hands-on BBRC Mexico City trip. We will help with a building project and give bicycles to an orphanage. This will be over the President's Day holiday weekend in February 2001. The
cost will be $534 for a roundtrip ticket on Continental Airlines. We are looking to bring some Sammamish High School students from the Spanish class with us. If you are interested, please
contact Jeff Cashman.
- Recife literary project. We are contributing $500 to a district project sponsored by the Recife Rotary Club of Brazil. This is the club that sponsored our exchange student,
Marina Petribu, last year. We are looking for someone to be a contact person for this project.
- Esperanza. We are looking to give support to Esperanza again this year.
We are also investigating the building of a dental clinic in an orphanage in Perm, Russia.
