 The Coffeehouse Investor

Schultheis, Holert, Clarke
Friday’s guest speaker, Bill Schultheis (L), chats with BBRC members Bob Holert and Dick Clarke (R).

Bob Holert introduced featured speaker Bill Schultheis, author of “The Coffeehouse Investor” and financial columnist for The Eastside Journal.

Bill’s philosophy of investing is that it should be a serious responsibility of people who are saving for their retirements and the protection of their families. Everyone wants to maximize the return on their investment at a minimum of risk. Bill contends that the easiest way to do that is to key your investments to a broad index of the stock market. And this, he stresses, should always be a long-term strategy.

Bill pointed out that 80% of professional market stock-pickers have underperformed the broad market average, and that making changes in the short-term, which many people do, simply increases the rate of underperformance.

As Bill pointed out, there is no second chance when you are making decisions regarding your retirement plans.

According to Bill, his concepts contained in The Coffeehouse Investor are simple:

  1. Save your money.
  2. Diversify your investments.
  3. Using some sort of an index, capture the rate of return for the entire stock market.

Bill introduced a healthy dose of general philosophy into his talk regarding living life, recounting his experiences growing up in the Palouse, and his brother’s determination from an early age to become an airline pilot, a goal which he has achieved. Bill also announced that he is in the process of joining the University Rotary Club.
