A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN

Howard Johnson, with the BBRC Chorus behind him, introduced a BBRC rendition of “Talkin’ Baseball,” renamed “Talkin’ Raffle” [see lyrics at right].

The 2005 grand prize, a red Volkswagen Beetle convertible, was prominently displayed outside the Glendale Golf Club window.

This year there are ten raffle teams, all coached by female members of the BBRC. The National League has the following teams and coaches:

• Raffle Rousers - Jenny Andrews
• Hell’s Bells - Mary Bell
• Pink Pikers - Margie Burnett
• Buty’s Beasts - Carlene Buty
• Rosy Riveters - Evelyn Cogswell

And the American League has these:

• Giggling Marlins - Wendi Fischer
• Bellevue Banditos - Jane Kuechle
• Flying Tigers - Sayoko Kuwahara
• Raffle Express - Jan Nestler
• Rotary Engines - Shelley Noble

With Officer Ballard playing the part of an ESPN reporter, Curtis “Curly” Cummings, manager of the National League, and Nick Paget — appearing by satellite feed — manager of the American League, delivered more corn pone. The best line belonged to Nick, who said he had to leave to interview a woman in upstate New York who has figured out how to sell tickets to the deceased.

After Rourke O’Brien delivered the usual pedestrian instructions (keep your numbered tickets in order when you turn them in ­ DUH), the 15th Annual BBRC Raffle got underway with the BBRC version of “Take Me Out to the Raffle.”
