The Friday Program: The Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club gathered at Willows Lodge, south of Woodinville, to mark the clubs 19th anniversary last Friday evening with an elegant party, attracting members, spouses and guests. One-hundred people attended the affair. With Chris Ballard and Nick Paget doing the honors as co-masters of ceremonies, the crowd enjoyed a reception prior to dinner and then settled in for a delicious meal, served by a battery of waitpersons. After a brief history of the BBRC, Peter Powell, Club Service II Director was asked to deliver the invocation and Chris Monger welcomed guests. The meal, consisting of three courses, featured entrées of Beef Tenderloin, Pan Roasted Chicken or Vegetarian plate. A short program followed the meal when the winner of the annual Raffle was announced. Winner of the 2004 Volkswagen Convertible was Gary Smith of Mercer Island. Gary bought a book of tickets from Larry May and one was drawn at the official drawing, Thursday, at 1:30, in Kirkland. The Smiths (Gary and his wife Mary Lou) were unable to attend Fridays dinner as they are retired and spend the winter in Arizona. Gary served as President of the Mercer Island Rotary Club in 1993. The new raffle winners are good friends with Andrew Faces family. Andrews dad Ned served as president of the Mercer Island Rotary Club in 1964. . President-Elect Steve Lingenbrink, who also doubles as General Chair of the Raffle, announced the details of this years major fund raising event. With a few precincts yet to report in, it appears there were tickets sold to the tune of $110,000 a new record with a prospect of another donation or two. An earlier auction netted $8,000; the annual Golf Outing netted $14,500; and Corporate Sponsorships netted $22,000. All of these nets add up to $154,500. Deduct $26,000 for the cost of the car and a soft total a preliminary final total will be in the vicinity of $130,000. A masterful job by the entire membership, particularly Jim Zidar, Raffle Chair; John DeWater and Steve Goldfarb, Raffle Team Leaders; and Terry Peterson, Cyril Faulkner and Rich Hammond, serving as the Raffle Accounting Team. Other kudos were noted: To Sayoko Powell, Chair of the Fellowship Committee, who sponsored the Anniversary Dinner; table decorations created by Wendi Fischers daughter and mother; Chris Monger and Peter Powell; and greeters. Phil Salvatori kicked off the ever-successful Christmas Giving Tree project with the unveiling of the Black Forest Tree. At the start of the evening, there were 110 ornaments on the tree, each revealing a Christmas wish for families served by Hopelink and the Eastside YMCA. Phil gave specific instructions for returning the gifts on either December 3 or 10. Past District Governor Dick Clarke proposed the toast that wished for continued success for the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club. President Norm Johnson noted the legacy that were building in the BBRC. I looked back at my induction year, 1989 and noted that four of the five members of that class of 89 have served as presidents of the BBRC. Steve Goldfarb, Kim Shrader, Bob McKorkle, and Norm Johnson have all had illustrious years leading the BBRC. (Jeff Maxwell remains the only holdout anybody asked Jeff recently?) Johnson continued by paying tribute to all the new members who have recently joined and have become new leaders. The Class of 2003-2004 has been particularly active Bill Brooks, Tom Miller, Rob LoBosco, Chip Erickson, Fred Barkman, Carlos Aragon, Curt Cummings, Carol Gibson, Michael McIntosh and Alan Forney. Pair them with the nine Charter members who are still active Terry Baker, Dick Brown, Doug Cameron, Don Chandler, Dick Clarke, Don Deasy, Jim Owens, John Smolke and Dick Tschetter and you have a solid group of members who have provided great leadership in the early years and a group who will lead in the future. As the Centennial year of 2005 approaches and the BBRC begins its 20th year, the legacy of excellence has been established with each and every member sharing in the success of this Rotary Club. |
