Preserve Planet Earth Attracts Mob A mob of Rotarians and their friends and families attacked the banks of the Sammamish River on Saturday morning, making quick work of a project to trim willow bushes planted by the BBRC seven years ago and to re-plant the sticks from the pruning to an area previously unplanted. Witnesses said that a total of 500 sticks were embedded, which covered about a 1/4-mile near downtown Redmond. The crew included 20 members and probably another 20 guests and family members. Steve Lingenbrink commented how important this event is for our kids. I was frankly amazed at what kind of impression this makes on our kids. They remember this outing from year to year and wouldnt let us adults forget theres another one coming! Just ask Steve Peters, whose daughters are most vocal about not planting their trees! Couple the actual work onsite with Alex Rules story about the impression left on him by the pond incident while growing up back East, and youve got a group of folks dedicated to helping the environment. You remember the Pond Incident: the neighborhoods favorite hockey-playing pond had deteriorated to the point that junk and old tires threatened to curtail the hockey games. Alex ask his teacher about his concerns and the teacher replied, Yes, well, what are YOU gonna do about it? Alex formed a pond-cleaning exercise, which included planting a few trees along the shore. Recently, Alex and his family paid a visit back to his old neighborhood. For old times sake, I went back down to the pond and was blessed by the growth of our trees and the good shape of the pond. While there, I ran into my old teacher and we had a wonderful reunion on the shores of our pond. A great environmental story. You can bet that the young Rule/Edberg child will be planting trees and shrubs any day now! The attendance reports shows the following on duty for Preserve Planet Earth: Steve Lingenbrink, Jenny Andrews, Rourke OBrien, Sayoko Powell, Brian Evison, Jim Owens, Chuck Barnes, Bill Spencer, Steve Peters, Peter Stadelman, Tom Purdy, Ron Healey, Chris Monger, Tim Moriarty, Chuck Kimbrough, Jim Young, Chip Erickson, Alex Rule and Jim Kindsvater.
