Reclassification Talk: Carlene Buty

This has been a year of change, said Carlene Buty, as she delivered her Reclassification Talk. “My husband Frank moved to a new banking opportunity after 31 years at his former bank. Three years ago, I was working in development for Overlake Hospital, when I received the call to serve my Alma Mater, Seattle University.”

Carlene first began work at SU in the development office, but late last year, she was offered the job of Director of Alumni Relations. “This is a Public Relations job, all about service and reconnecting alumni back to the University. Just recently, we partnered with students and alumni — 750 strong — to participate in United Way’s One Day of Caring. And, the alumni are important cogs in the development of the Japanese Remembrance Garden now underway.”

Carlene said the University has over 50,000 alumni in all 50 states and over 100 foreign nations. She reeled off a list of “lots of famous alumni.” She was right, there are!

Seattle University was founded in 1891, one of 28 Jesuit universities in the country. It began as a college for men, engaging women in 1933. Today, there are 6800 students, spread over 48 acres, representing eight major disciplines. The goal of the institution is to develop critical thinkers and compassionate citizens. The school is highly rated, being one of the top ten regional universities. With its spot in the center of Seattle, it is involved in the life of the city.

Carlene was presented her new Blue Badge, signifying her change in classification. She noted it took her three years to get the badge, but she failed to mention that her classification was changing almost daily! We’re happy she’s settled into gainful employment and doubly happy she’s a Bellevue Breakfast Rotarian!
