Alternative Energy Hope for the Future

Nixon2Not only did the members of the BBRC get a novel look at a system that could solve the world’s energy problems, but had a candid 30 minutes with the brother of the late President Richard Nixon. Ed Nixon, president of Pyron, Inc. -- a California research and development company -- gave a fascinating look at how ideas become reality.

Now a resident of the Seattle area, Mr. Nixon told of his interest in finding new ways to fuel our thirst for energy back in 1973, “when my brother was faced with some pretty tough decisions in regard to energy.” The oil crisis of that year created long lines at the gas pumps all over the world.

Nixon could see that importing energy resources were killing our nation. “So, I began looking into alternative means of supplying energy. He reasoned that we were dependent on oil for sometime, “but now at age 74, I’m confident my company and the alliance we’ve put together has a better idea.”

Ed Nixon is a scientist, and a consultant in mineral resources. Most recently, he’s been working in China on various projects. His company, Pyron, Inc. has developed — in cooperation with the Boeing Company — a new system to convert sunlight into energy.

The history of alterative energy sources has confused the world. “There’s cogeneration, solar dynamics, wind energy, geodynamics, and lunar dynamics. These are all potential sources of new energy, but we need alternatives we can depend on. It’s a long bridge to the future and we still need oil.”

Nixon said, “In 1973, I was studying geology and looking at resources. I was taken by the idea of direct radiation with energy from the sun and reasoned that it could be converted to electricity. I became acquainted with a German scientist John Lange who had developed an advanced idea taking energy from the sun directly. His plans focused the direct beam of radiation on a photoelectric cell developed by the Boeing Company.

Pyron, Inc, is an R&D company in La Jolla, California, developed in cooperation with BOEING-Spectrolab the novel system to convert sunlight into electricity. Quoting from Pyron’s website: “This revolutionary design is a low-profile floating system with short-focal-lePyronngth lenses concentrating direct sunlight by 400X onto photovoltaic cells. These advanced multi-junction cells produce 800 times more electricity than conventional non-concentrating cells the same size. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy confirmed 37.3% efficiency. With these modified space-age cells, PYRON developed a truly 21st-century, Earth-friendly generator, an innovative system with numerous positive implications for the sustainability of global-scale power and a solar-hydrogen economy.”

On August 4 of this year, the circle was tested successfully in two spots in California. Nixon has determined it will cost $2 a watt for construction of the plant, and he envisions an “Energy Farm” with dozens of the circles spread along the Mexican-American border. His concept will create enough electricity to feed all of the United States. He also said that strategically-place farms between latitude 32 North and South around the world could easily provide all of the electricity needed to light the world.

“So my message to you this morning is, Stop burning fossil fuels,” Nixon said. “One of the by-products of this process is the production of hydrogen by electrolysis which could replace gasoline and diesel fuel. And, by utilizing a magneto-plasma-dynamic generator, electricity can be produced during the night.” Patents have been filed for all inventive features in major countries and a number of patents have already been issued.

In answer to a question, Nixon said the cost of solar power will compete with the cost of nuclear. He said it would take $22 million to get mass-producing techniques devised. “Our major problem is to get the citizens of our country and others to consider this technology and go forward in its production. Our prototypes in California would be built into a solar energy farm. I’m concerned that the Chinese demand for oil will put pressure on the whole marketing system.” When asked once the mass-production system was developed and the nation got aboard on this project, how long would it take to begin seeing results? Surprisingly, Ed answered, “Two years.”

So, what are we waiting for? Do you know anyone who has $22 million dollars? With the kind of money he throws around these days, you’d think that Uncle Sam could afford an idea that’s been worked on for over 30 years and now has produced prototype results. There’s probably not a Rotarian who heard this message that wouldn’t want a piece of the action. Maybe this calls for a major commitment from all the world’s nations.

With Correspondent Helen Mix asking Mr. Nixon the final question, the program ended. The question was: “Mr. Nixon, have you ever slept at the White House?” The answer was: “Yes, but not in the Lincoln Bedroom!”

For his highly interesting presentation, Ed was presented a certificate showing the BBRC had donated 1100 pounds of fresh food from Rotary First Harvest to food banks in Washington. Our thanks to Jim Gordon for securing this program and for his introduction, even though he failed to tell us who Ed Nixon was!
